‘The Crimes of Grindelwald’ Debuts Its First Teaser Trailer!

March 13, 2018 By Katie Leave a Comment

It looks like we’re going back to Hogwarts, at least for a little while, in the new trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald! Take a look below!

Hogwarts will always be our home…

In this trailer, we get our first look at young!Dumbledore, played by Jude Law, as he casually leans against his desk and explains to investigators that no one can actually make Newt Scamander do anything. At the end of the trailer, he tells Newt that he can’t go after Grindelwald on his own, that Newt must be the one to act against him. We know this is deeply rooted in his past with Grindelwald.

The question remains, will they allow the romantic aspect of Grindelwald and Dumbledore’s relationship to play out onscreen or will that get pushed aside as “unimportant”. For me, the notion that Dumbledore was in love with Grindelwald adds onto pain that happened after Ariana’s death and their subsequent falling out.

Only time will tell on that storyline.

In line with the established Fantastic Beasts franchise, this film will follow Newt, Jacob, Tina and Queenie as they each try and support the fight against Grindelwald in their own way. We got our first look at Leta LeStrange, played by Zoë Kravitz, in this trailer, too. I can’t wait to see her in this role or her interactions with Newt! It’s got the promise for some angst, but also a look into the LeStrange family years before the arrival of Bellatrix (her siblings and extended family).

In a brief moment at the end, we catch a glimpse of Newt and his brother, Theseus, performing a protection? spell together. That dynamic should be interesting as well. Seeing how Theseus is the war hero brother and now fiancé of Leta, and Newt is…well, Newt.

There’s a glimpse of Credence and his new friend. It appears he can now control his obscurus. What would that mean for Grindelwald if he were able to truly befriend him?

As the voiceover and text within the trailer suggests, we’ll be pulling a theme from the Harry Potter series, articulated by Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire:

“Dark times lie ahead of us and there will be a time when we must choose between what is easy and what is right.”

Someone (Dumbledore? His brother?) tells Newt:

“A time is coming, Newt, where you’re going to have to pick a side.”

The text asks the questions:

“Who will stand against the darkness?”

Watch the trailer and give us you theories!

I’m torn beyond belief when it comes to this film. As someone who grew up with the world of Harry Potter, I don’t want to let go of the magic it has given me, but I absolutely disagree the casting decision and defense of it. After all, this is a magical world, why couldn’t Grindelwald transform into his true shape…one that isn’t Johnny Depp?
