RECAP: ‘Preacher’ Season 1 Episode 3, “The Possibilities”

June 14, 2016 By Katie Leave a Comment

“The Possibilities” follows Jesse as he begins to understand the nature of his new powers, and Cassidy strikes up an unlikely alliance with the angels, DeBlanc and Fiore.

I really love the way the show cuts from scene-to-scene with a setting name shot, so that’s how I’ve decided to set up these recaps. It’s fun and definitely helps keep everything in its place.

Houston

The episode opens with Dany trying to get Tulip to murder her husband. Tulip is less than impressed and refuses to murder him, and we know this isn’t the first time Dany has asked this favor.

Tulip hands over her map to Dany, and Dany gives her an address.

This causes Tulip to flashback to the day everything between her and Jesse turned bad, and she’s being left behind on a job while an alarm sounds off behind her.

She vows vengeance on the person who caused it, and we always take Tulip at her word.

The scene cuts to a theatre. I have absolutely no idea what’s happening in the film they’re watching, but it’s either a snuff film, or a highly graphic horror movie.

Dany hands over the map and gets waved away by the man she gives it to.

A man in a wide-brimmed hand exits the theatre through an underground tunnel.

(The new opening credits are amazing, by the way!)

Annville

We’re back with the angels talking to Sheriff Root about what they’re looking for. He takes everything they say at face value and never questions them. They tell him not to tell anyone they’re here and to leave them alone, and the only question Sheriff has is if they’re looking for an escaped convict.

He literally asks no further questions, only tells them a story about a family who lost their child at an amusement park in Indiana. They left two kids at a booth with some stranger, and eventually find their other kid.

The two kids they left got murdered by the man they left them with.

The angels look like they have no idea why he’s telling them this, and Sheriff just leaves.

They decide they’re going to try again with the can. The one they left behind when Cassidy killed them the first time.

Fiore throws back the covers to show a bed load of firearms.

Loach Residence

Well, Jesse told her Tracy to open her eyes, but he didn’t specify more than that.

Tracy is still out, but her eyes are open. Her mother is telling Emily everything that happened with Jesse, and that it feels like something important has happened.

Donnie’s House

He’s walking his son to school, but detours down an alley, saying he needs to talk to his son. The kid apologizes for talking to the preacher about Donnie beating his momma, and what follows is a seriously awkward conversation as his dad tries to explain that he’s not hurting his mom.

“Grown-ups are complicated. So, just. I love your mom.”

As he walks away, his kid tells hims that he beat the crap out of kid at school for making fun of his dad for preacher breaking his arm.

Donnie tells him good job.

At the bus stop, the bus driver can’t remember the girl’s name he was stalking, and he’s got a bandage on his face. When Donnie asks what happened, the kids on the bus call him “bunny man” and tell him to make the noise. He’s ridiculously mad about all this.

The Church

Someone is banging on the door, and Cassidy finally brings himself downstairs to answer it.

Emily sneaks up behind him and asks him what he’s been doing since the delivery was made more than a hour ago. He’s supposed to take something somewhere and drop it off, but he’s not even dressed.

Granted, she doesn’t know he’s a vampire, so sunlight is a no-go for him anyway.

She says she’s suppsed to meet Jesse in an hour and Cassidy tells her that she couldn’t wait, putting her feelings for Jesse out in the open between them.

After Cassidy gets dressed and grabs the keys to the van, he walks through the church and finds Jesse sitting in the dark.

When he asks if Jesse’s all right, Jesse tells him he wants to show him something.

On the highway

Tulip is going 115 in a 55 and gets pulled over by a state trooper. She starts out being smart mouth, but once the officer shows her that he’s taking her in, she pulls out all the stops.

She pretends to have served in the military then lays on a thick story about how she’s trying to help a friend. He hasn’t been open to help until today, and she was just trying to get him.

“You sure he’s worth it?”

“I really wish he weren’t.”

The officer lets her go, and Tulip peels out.

The church

Jesse is using his powers to show Cassidy what he can do. He has him hopping on one leg, answering all sorts of questions, from which we learn Cassidy likes Justin Bieber and doesn’t know who the Governor of Texas is.

It all ends when he tells Cassidy to fly and he throws himself into a wall.

The whole scene is hilarious and plays up my new favorite television bromance.

Quincannon Meat & Power

Quinncannon sits at his desks and listens to the cows being killed. It’s completely traumatic and tells you how many problems this guy has.

The Church

Cassidy paces, throwing out suggestions to Jesse over what is going on with him.

They range from what happened to John Travolta in Phenomenon, Jason Bourne, or that Jesse is a Jedi.

He likes Jedi the best, and personally, so do I.

Jesse doesn’t seem to share Cassidy’s enthusiasm, though.

When asked how long he’s had it, Jesse says since the night before, or maybe longer. Then he explains how it feels.

“It feels like there’s a big blender in my gut. And inside that blender there’s everything. Love, hate, fire, ice, polonium, ice cream, tarantulas, everything. All of God’s creation inside of me. You know that kind of crazy?”

Cassidy believes that Jesse is in shock, but even though it feels like a curse, it doesn’t have to be.

“Someone like you, with something like this. I mean, c’mon padre, you just imagine the possibilities here.”

The Hotel

The scene cuts to Tom Cruise’s funeral on television (which I will never get over), and the angels, Deblanc and Fiore, locking and loading as they get ready to storm the church and get that green energy ball out of Jesse.

Quincannon

Donnie is reading a letter from Jerry Cutler that seems to be saying that they aren’t ready to make a deal with Qunicannon.

Donnie offers to beat them up, but Quincannon tells him what he can do is clear his tray. Donnie only has one good arm, and can’t do it, so he gets waved away.

“A right-hand man with no right hand.”

Donnie looking super pissed as he leaves his office.

Annville

Next, we see Cassidy, dressed in a poncho and big hat, pick up Ted’s ashes from the funeral home then come out just in time to see a black SUV drive past. It’s the same one the angel’s drove before…

The scene cuts to Jesse driving down the highway and getting flagged down by Tulip.

Jesse asks her if he seems different to her, but Tulip says that he doesn’t. She gets tired of his vague nonsense, so she dives into what went down with Dany.

They get into an argument because that’s what they do, and Tulip tells him that this isn’t just a job, it’s justice. That’s when we see Jesse’s flashback of that day from before with Tulip.

Jesse (his hair is much longer) is standing over a security guard, gun drawn, who was shot in the head. A car drives away behind him and Tulip screams for the driver to wait.

She tells him what he has in her possession, a last known address.

We find out that Tulip knows exactly why Jesse is back there, and that he made a promise to his father about being a “good guy”.

With that bit of conversation, Jesse leaves his truck on the side of the road and gets in the car with Tulip as they go in search of a man named Carlos that they desperately want to kill.

The Church

The two angels lock and load and head across the pasture toward the church when Cassidy runs them smooth over.

He tells at their bodies that they need to drive a different truck next time if they want to get him. Once he takes a closer look, he realizes that it’s the same two men he killed before, and he doesn’t know how to explain it at first, but eventually settles on clones.

“Now I’ve got to clean them up all over again.”

As he leaves them on the ground, a blue light flashes over them.

Cassidy is searching for something to use to dispose of the bodies when he hears something enter the church. He goes out to meet them, and attacks on angel before the other is able to get him to stop.

“We’re not here for you. We’re here for the preacher. He has something of ours and we need to put it back.”

A gas station

Tulip is filling up the car, and then running over strategies on killing Carlos. They include a hammer and battery acid.

Jesse is about to tell her about his newfound power when a car comes up and starts honking at Tulip for her to get out of the way. She walks toward them and calls them out then they leave.

Jesse feels like the time has passed and goes inside to use the bathroom.

Inside the bathroom, he’s confronted by Donnie.

He’s holding on a gun on Jesse, and tells him to turn around and get on his knees. He tells Jesse squeal.

“I’m not going to squeal for you, Donnie.”

“Well, you’re gonna die for me.”

“I will make a deal with you. Cops find your body, I’ll make it look like a suicide. No reason for the whole town to know I beat you like a bitch twice.”

Donnie raises the gun to backhand Jesse, and that’s when Jesse uses the full force of his powers.

He tells Donnie to stop. Back up. Sit down. Put the gun in his mouth. Pull back the hammer.

After several seconds of thinking, Jesse tells Donnie to drop the gun.

He finally understands what his powers are for, and he tells Donnie to that he can go and he runs away scared as hell over what just happened.

I’m desperately imploring each of you to watch this scene so you can understand the hotness that is Dominic Cooper. PLEASE.

When Jesse comes back outside, he tells Tulip that he’s changed his mind and he’s not going to kill Carlos. When Tulip asks him what they’re going to do about Carlos, Jesse tells her that they’re going to leave him to God.

She yells that she’s not leaving without him, and we honestly expect nothing less from Tulip.

Back at the church

The angels have explained the whole situation to Cassidy. When he asks them what they’re going to do with it, they tell him nothing. Nothing was ever supposed to be done with it. He continues to ask them where they’re from, and they finally tell him that they’re from heaven. Cassidy explains to them that they can’t keep coming after Jesse because he won’t tolerate it, and he’ll be their middleman from then on. He’ll explain to Jesse the importance of their mission and bring Jesse to them instead of them trying to attack Jesse.

The angels seems to fall for it.

Sheriff Roots’ House

Eugene is talking to his dad over dinner and brings up Tracy.

He’s amazed that she opened her eyes, and he wants to go and visit her, but his daddy tells him to stay away from her and the whole family unless he wants to get killed.

The Graveyard

The funeral for Ted goes off without a hitch or anyone in attendance beside Jesse and Emily.

The verse he uses talks about the trumpet sounding (the rapture) and how people will be changed. This continues the theme of Revelation from the pilot.

New Questions for this episode…

What happened between Tracy and Eugene? He seems to be responsible for her accident, and that’s why he attempted suicide. Need more puzzle pieces!

Who exactly is Carlos and will Tulip get that vengeance or is the God that Jesse speaks of actually how he views himself now?

What about Cassidy? He’s totally playing those angels, right?
