RECAP: ‘The Originals,’ Alive and Kicking

October 15, 2014 By T.J. 3 Comments

When word came out The Vampire Diaries (TVD) was getting a spin-off that would focus on the original vampire family the Mikaelson’s, I was so excited. Finally, we could delve into their early years and maybe see each instance Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) daggered his siblings. That wasn’t the case, instead The Originals would move the existing TVD Mikaleson family story-line to New Orleans and new characters and folklore would be introduced.

Season 1, even though interesting didn’t captivate me fully like I hoped it would. So I was apprehensive about watching Season 2. When the second season premiere episode, “Rebirth” aired I waited almost a week to watch it and I am truly sorry I did. It was a great episode, so I made sure there would be no waiting to watch episode 2, “Alive and Kicking“.

“Alive and Kicking” was filled with glorious flashbacks of young Marcel and his relationship with Elijah Mikaelson (Daniel Gillies). And due to their growing bond, Klaus in a fit of jealously undaggers Kol Mikaelson (Nathaniel Buzolic). Seeing Nathaniel in the role of destructive Kol was fantastic, even if it was solely in flashbacks.

We found out at the end of Season 1 that Esther Mikaelson was back, but housed in the body of Harvest witch, Cassie (Natalie Dreyfuss) and accompanying her was Finn Mikaelson in the warlock body of Vincent Griffith (Yusuf Gatewood). And now we know that Kol Mikaelson is back as well, but in the body of Kaleb (Daniel Sharman). Having Kol back this way isn’t what many of us wanted, but it is what we will get.

Cassie has plans to restore the balance (aka kill her kiddies) by creating an alliance between the witches and the werewolves. The werewolves help the witches and in turn Cassie provides them with moonstone rings that allow them to no longer need to turn during the full moon. Cassie attempts to use Kaleb to figure out what Davina (Danielle Campbell) has up her sleeve and if Kol/Kaleb was an actual ally to his mother, she would know that Mikael (Sebastian Roché) is back and in the flesh. Cassie via Vincent plans a vampire attack on Davina in Kaleb’s presence and since Mikael is at the beck and call of Davina’s will and whim, he rescues her. During the rescue Davina loses the bracelet that makes Mikael do as she pleases, he turns to attack her and in comes Elijah to the rescue. Which leads to him realizing that his father, Mikael is alive and almost gets him an indestructible white oak stake in his heart during their fight. Only due to Marcel’s (Charles Michael Davis) assistance is Davina able to retrieve her bracelet and have Mikael leave.

Before and through the flashbacks and drama in the Quarter that revealed Mikael being alive to Elijah, Marcel was making an effort to recruit more vampires and Elijah was trying to assert his power over Marcel and Davina. Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) was having a meltdown and tried to get her bearings again by attempting to get her people/pack to trust her with a little help from Klaus, who declared she is “their queen.” Klaus was summoned by Cassie to have a gab fest, only for him to walk away with the realization that Cassie was indeed his mother, Esther.

The takeaway from “Alive and Kicking” is that Elijah and Klaus know that both their parents are alive and they must kill them.

What was your favorite moment in the The Originals episode, “Alive and Kicking”?
