‘Outlander’ and the Delicate Art of Fan Service

March 20, 2020 By Katie Leave a Comment

In five seasons, Outlander has given us some incredible moments. A few veer into fan service territory, and we welcome it! Here are some of our favorites!

Fan service is a term we’re very familiar with in fandom. It’s when a show gives the audience what they want in a scene, episode or relationship. The relationship doesn’t have to be romantic in nature either. A fan service friendship can be a beautiful thing.

Outlander has mastered the art of fan service. Since the series is an adaptation of the novels, the writers and producers try to ensure favorite book moments are brought to screen. We must say, the do them justice!

Here are some of our favorite fan service moments on Outlander!

“The Fiery Cross” kicked off season five with many fan-service moments, but the one that stuck with us the most was Jamie breaking out his kilt.

Yes, ya’ll! YES!

Jamie saying: “If Tryon wants a Scot, I’ll give him a Scot.” then showing up in full Laird attire sent us to very good places!

Another real satisfying moment in the season five premiere was when Roger sang to Bree, and we got to see all of our lovely couples coming together. I feel like the premiere set us on solid ground for the rest of the season to play out on.

Let’s take a small detour to season two for a couple of moments that really stuck with us. The first one is Claire in that scandalous red dress and Jamie’s reaction to it! Even Murtagh couldn’t look away!

In season two, we had the awful Comte St. Germain. He tried to get sick people off his ship at the start and stayed mad at Claire for costing him that ship’s contents. He tried to poison her later, too. In the end, Claire got him. This isn’t his death, but it’s right leading up to it. It’s what he deserved.

After Claire goes back through the stones before the Battle of Culloden, she settles into a new normal. This takes her down a path to becoming a doctor, and that’s where she meets her new best friend. Joe Abernathy.

He’s one of the few people that Claire ever tell about Jamie, and he encourages her to find him. We see him again in season five during Claire’s flashbacks, and we find out he loves romance novels. This proves that Joe is the absolute best.

Once Claire realizes that Jamie survived the Battle of Culloden, she makes the hard decision to go back through the stones, leaving her daughter behind, to find him again. We watched with bated breath as she walked into his print shop, and waited for him to turn around and see her.

I can’t do it justice, so just watch the scenes again!

During season three, Jamie is sent to servitude from Ardsmuir while his godfather, Murtagh, is sent to the Americas. We wondered if we’d ever see our favorite dancing Scot again, and when he popped back up on our screens, there were tears of joy!

Switching gears a little, let’s talk about Jamie’s kids. If there’s one thing Jamie has always wanted, it’s to raise his children. An experience he’s always been denied. In season four, he did get to spend some quality time with his son, Willie, when Lord John visited him at Fraser’s Ridge.

This next moment is a big on. It was the one we had waited for since we found out Claire was pregnant in season two. Will Jamie ever meet Brianna, and if he does, how will that go?

It didn’t disappoint.

Finally, any and all love scenes or swoony words between Claire and Jamie.
