Jamie and Claire interact with more of their Fraser’s Ridge neighbors and, in the process, try to mitigate conflict between new settlers and the local Cherokee. Get a sneak peek of this week’s Outlander, “Savages”!
Sassenachs, it shouldn’t surprise us that during the week that Americans celebrated Thanksgiving, the episode of Outlander which aired was of Jamie and Claire coming into into contact with local Native American groups as they try to settle Fraser’s Ridge. Jamie and Claire tried to find “Common Ground” with the Cherokee, and were able to do so thanks for the interference of a wily bear… In the 20th Century, Bree and Roger also tried to find common ground with one another in the aftermath of their blow-up, and it seemed that news of Claire and Jamie could be that bridge–especially because Bree is going through the Stones, y’all!
We shared our thoughts of this and more in our written recap and video review:
In this week’s episode “Savages” (written by Bronwyn Garrity, directed by Denise Di Novi):
Claire’s medical expertise proves invaluable for a family of German settlers, but she begins to fear for her life when tragedy strikes her patients’ household. Jamie and Young Ian travel to a nearby town to recruit settlers for Fraser’s Ridge, but find their progress hindered by a burgeoning political movement. (via STARZ)
I think back to Adawehi’s dream about Claire and how she says: “You must not be troubled. Death is sent from the gods. It will not be your fault.” I thought that Adawehi could be referencing the impending decimation of Native American populations. Given Claire’s knowledge of the future, she might feel additional pressure to stop the mistreatment of Native Americans. It seemed that Adawehi was telling Claire not to feel guilt in her inability to broker that change. And this week, we see Claire try to mitigate conflicts between European settlers and the local Cherokee.
