PREVIEW: ‘Outlander’ Season 3, Episode 5 “Freedom & Whisky”

October 6, 2017 By Funmbi Leave a Comment

Just when Claire has said goodbye to Jamie (again), Roger returns with incredible news. Watch a sneak peek of this week’s Outlander, “Freedom & Whisky.”

Sassenachs, I’m still very deep in my feelings about last week’s Outlander. Sam Heughan is absolutely brilliant, but damn it, can Jamie *please* catch a break?! *SIGH* Ultimately, I have very mixed feelings about “Of Lost Things.”

I think the TV adaptation does a better job of humanizing Geneva (particularly as it relates to her blackmailing Jamie/Mac into sex). While the sexy times in the book are problematic because of several violations of consent, last week’s episode is uncomfortable but HOT. And, for better or for worse, Claire is ever-present. This one exchange has life-changing consequences in the form of young Willie. It’s so heartening to see Jamie share in Willie’s first eight years of life, but he must have always known it would be temporary. In the end, to prevent further questioning of Willie’s legitimacy, Jamie leaves his son (as far as he’s concerned, the only child he’ll ever know). *HEARTBREAK*

Similarly, in 1968, Claire decides to leave Jamie in the past, stop chasing ghosts, so she and Bree can return to their lives in Boston.

For more, check out my full recap of “Of Lost Things” HERE, plus our the video review of the episode on our YouTube channel where Katie and I talk more about Geneva, my suspicions of Lord John Grey, among other things!

By the end of “Of Lost Things,” on Jamie’s side, he’s two years away from synching up with Claire. That is, 1764 = 1966. So… what now? Where is Jamie in 1766 (=1968, Claire’s present)? Is Claire really giving up?

In this week’s episode, “Freedom & Whisky” (written by Toni Graphia, directed by Brendan Maher):

As Brianna grapples with the life-changing revelations of the past summer, Claire must help her come to terms with the fact that she is truly her father’s daughter – her 18th century Highlander father. To complicate matters further, Roger brings news that forces Claire and Brianna to face an impossible choice. (via STARZ)

Roger must have found something important to make his way to Boston… with that said, after his kiss with Bree, he might just want to be back in her presence. *EEP*

Take a look at these two clips from the “Freedom & Whisky”. In the first (via E! Online exclusive), Roger has arrived in Boston at a tense time… Bree is struggling with what she learned in Scotland and returning to her old life.

In the second video (via Harper’s Bazaar exclusive), Claire and Joe catch up, as friends do, and the conversation naturally shifts to Jamie.

I really sympathize with Bree. Her world was blown apart in Scotland, and even though the relationship with her mother has improved, I can understand not wanting to return to Boston and go back to “business as usual”. And with Claire, I really don’t want her to give up on Jamie. I am 100% with Joe: “fuck fate!”

Besides, according to the episode trailer (below) the end of this week’s episode might just bring Claire back to Scotland and A. Malcolm’s printshop. I’m freaking out!

Check out seven images from “Freedom & Whisky” and remember to tune in to STARZ this Sunday, October 8 at 8p|7c for the new Outlander. Make sure to come live tweet with me on Twitter too!
