RECAP: ‘Preacher’ Season Two, Episode Eight, “Holes”

August 13, 2017 By Katie Leave a Comment

Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy are still struggling separately on Preacher, and with Herr Starr on the way, things could get bad quickly. Down in Hell, Eugene learns a very important lesson. Here’s our recap of “Holes”!

This week on Preacher, we saw Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy remaining distant as they each deal with their own personal issues still. Since their encounter with the Saint of Killers, they’ve been drifting further apart. There’s very little interaction between them, we’ll talk about the one scene that causes the most tension and will likely cause a rift between Jesse and Cassidy in a little bit, and they seem okay with the distant at the moment.

What are they all up to?

Jesse

He’s still obsessively trying to find God, and in that pursuit, he’s failing to see that Tulip is in dire need of his presence. He takes Cassidy’s advice and take the DVD to some experts, hoping they can find the serial number on the gun so he can trace it and find the people who know where God went.

Of course the geeks think he has murdered someone and assure him there’s no way anyone could trace the video back to him because there’s no serial number. Jesse tells them it’s not and they finally believe him and look for the reflection on on the clapperboard.

He prays for the first time in a long time for a sign, but it turns out the reflection is a coffee mug. Jesse tells the dork dudes to get rid of the DVD because “there’s nothing on it” and leaves.

As they put it through the shredder, we see “Property of Grail Industries” on the bottom.

If he had only looked a little closer…

Tulip

Tulip goes out to The Hurt Locker again, by herself, even after Cassidy advises against it, and the next day, she runs into the Jesse as he’s leaving to go to the DVD store. She asks if she can go with him, but it’s not to find out what could be on the DVD. It’s to get a new fridge. When Jesse figures out that she didn’t come to help him with the “dork dudes”, he’s not exactly pleased and Tulip leaves anyway. She spends most of the episode filling the holes in all the apartment walls left behind by the Saint of Killer’s bullet.

She’s so very lost in herself this episode and it’s really troubling to see Tulip this way. She seems unsure of how to move forward past this point.

At the end of the episode, she reaches the final apartment on the floor, where the bullet started, and knocks. This is where the Grail has set up its operatives, Featherstone and Hoover. After a quick wardrobe change, Featherstone answers the door as “Jennie” and lets Tulip in to patch the hole in the wall.

Featherstone makes up a lie about the gun on her side table and how she doesn’t have much furniture by saying she ran away from an abusive boyfriend and couldn’t take much with her. In the end, Tulip accepts the story and asks “Jennie” if she wants to go to The Hurt Locker with her and she says yes.

Cassidy

In my opinion, Cassidy and Denis’ story has been the most compelling the past couple of episodes, and “Holes” focuses on the aftermath of what Denis asked of Cassidy last episode.

He wants Cassidy to turn him into a vampire because he’s dying.

This episode sees Denis take a very bad turn, coughing up blood everywhere and Cassidy taking care of him. In one heartbreaking scene, Denis uses an app on his phone that translates his French into English. After his coughing fit, Cassidy lays him on the chair and the app proceeds to translate what Denis has been begging:

“Bite me. Bite me. Bite me.”

Cassidy is completely torn. He wants to save his son, but he also knows that being a vampire isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. He goes to Tulip before she plays handyman and asks if she would ever want to be a vampire, and she says it might be cool.

“You don’t have to worry because nothing hurts you. You know, there’s nothing to be afraid of.”

“Well, things still hurt.”

—-

“And there’s the boredom. You’ve heard every joke. Drugs barely work. And then everyone you ever cared or loved just…just dies. Except you.”

“Yep. That sucks.”

“Yeah.”

Later, Cassidy asks Jesse if he would use Genesis to save Denis. This is the scene I was mentioning earlier. Jesse seems to have finally developed a conscious when it comes to Genesis and tells Cassidy no.

“Padre? You know when you were asking if there was anything you could do to help? With Denis?”

“You want me to pray for him?”

“No, Christ, no. Well, sure, if it’d help like, but that’s not what I was thinkin’.”

“What?”

Look, I don’t know if it’s possible or even doable or how your power works there in terms of guidelines and parameters What the bloody rules are, per se, but Padre, he’s dying, alright? Maybe you could just…

“Jesus, Cass. I mean I’m not sure Genesis could help, but even if it could I just…I don’t think that’s what it’s for.”

“Right. Of course. Probably not.”

“You understand?”

I have my doubts about Jesse being noble here. I think he’s afraid him using Genesis will send out a signal to the Saint of Killers who is still stuck at the bottom of a swamp.

In the end, we see Cassidy singing to Denis just like he did on the day he was born. This song sort of bookends Denis’ life, so either he’s about to die or Cassidy’s about to give him a new one.

Only time will tell.

Eugene

Down in Hell, Eugene is experiencing a afterlife crisis it seems.

He’s doing pull-ups and getting fit for prison life, he’s got ‘Tracy’ tattooed across his back now. He’s super cool and chill and won’t hesitate to push down wimpy Hitler.

It’s enough to make you sideeye everything that’s happening down there. Of course, Ms. Mannering has figured out what the issue is and needs to know which one of them isn’t supposed to be in Hell. You’d think they had a better way of keeping up with important stuff like that, but she’s already told Eugene they’re hella busy down there.

So, one woman says she’s not supposed to be there then several other people join in saying it’s really them that got put in Hell by mistake. One unlucky fellow is nice enough to pick up Mannering’s pen cap when she drops it and he’s taken away for being good.

This paves the way for Hitler to show Eugene that things can get worse in Hell…

After Eugene makes the mistake of helping someone up after they’ve fallen down, Mannering takes him and throws him down a hole. In it, his Hell starts but this time when he kisses Tracy, she says she wishes he would have told her he liked her sooner…before she gave herself to God.

That’s when Jesse comes out of the bathroom, and things get really, really awkward.

Hitler later apologizes to Eugene for what he went through but he needed to make a point.

You see, Hitler used to be a big prize in Hell. They had high hopes for him and let him walk around anywhere he wanted. When they realized he wasn’t going to be their golden boy, they locked him in a cell to relive his worst day. During his trial run, he learned a lot about the place and now he wants to help Eugene escape.

Is he telling the truth, though? I mean, this is hell and that’s Hitler, so who knows?

Herr Starr is on his way to NOLA. Meanwhile, Featherstone and Hoover have set up shop down the hallway and have cameras up in Denis’ apartment, keeping an eye on things. With Tulip’s invitation to The Hurt Locker standing, it seems like “Jennie” might get an even closer look at the apartment soon.

On the upcoming episode of Preacher, Jesse seems to know that the men in white are coming, Tulip borrows Jennie’s gun, and Starr has a very important date. Here’s a look at the clips and stills from “Puzzle Piece”.
