RECAP: ‘Preacher’ Season 2, Episode 6 “Sokosha”

July 30, 2017 By Katie Leave a Comment

Jesse finally meets the Saint of Killers on Preacher and gives up something precious to save Tulip, Cassidy, and Denis. Here’s our recap of “Sokosha”.

Preacher opened up a lot of story for us last week with “Sokosha” and it’s time to talk about the top five things we learned from this action packed episode! Let’s dive right in with our countdown!

The New Orleans Public Library is legit, y’all. They went in to find out about the Saint of Killers, and not only did they find out everything they needed to know, it was in multiple formats: graphic novels (nods to the source material for the show), audiotape, romance novel covers, and renaissance painting prints of God sending the Saint to Hell.

What we did learn that was very important, though, was that the Saint of Killers was the only man to walk to the Earth that had no soul. That was a big part of why he couldn’t get into Heaven in the first place.

And comes back to bite him in the ass later in the show…

If you’re like me, you’ve been wondering for a while who Denis is and how he’s connected to Cassidy. Especially since Cassidy can’t speak French, and we don’t really know anything about Denis.

The bomb was dropped this episode that Cassidy is Denis’ father. He’s sitting beside Denis on the couch when he makes this revelation to Tulip. Denis is having asthma issues and Cassidy is truly concerned for his son, especially since they’re being held hostage by the Saint of Killers until Jesse returns with something (a soul) for him.

Seeing a parent helpless as their child is hurting, pushes Tulip to go into the next room and try to speak to the Saint of Killers…which brings us to the next point on our list.

Oh, and Cassidy loses all his fingers as he saves Tulip from the Saint of Killers saber later in the episode when Jesse cuts it close getting back.

Does the Saint of Killers touch do something to people?

When he grabs Denis early in the episode, he’s got him by the clothes. Later, when he drags Tulip into the kitchen to kill her for Jesse being late, he doesn’t touch her skin.

However, when Tulip goes to convince him to let Denis go get his medicine since he’s in dire need, he grabs her by the throat/chin area and holds her in the air. After he tosses her aside, she’s noticeably shaken, but she tells Cassidy:

“He put his hands on me.”

Did she feel something when the Saint of Killers touched her? Has he touched other people in the series so far that didn’t end up dead pretty much immediately, so we didn’t notice the effects. Or has this triggered some PTSD in Tulip as she comes from an abusive family?

As you can see, I have questions.

Souls are FOR SALE in NOLA.

It turns out that business was booming before the Japanese came in with their high tech equipment and big pay checks. When the episode opens, we see a man giving up 15% of his soul for a decent sum of money. The man who took it leaves in the back of an armored car–a sokosha.

He goes to a very lovely home and meets an older man and woman. Once they determine she’s a match, the salesman turns the soul into a crystal. The older woman, who seems to have Alzheimer’s, takes the soul crystal and is instantly healed. Her husband uses a credit card to pay the bill that’s over two million.

Well, later, when Jesse is sent to find a soul for the Saint of Killers, he finds out about the Japanese have taken over and that the only people left with any ties to soul buying are the L’Angells…Jesse’s family on his mother’s side. Naturally, he doesn’t want to go there…so he uses Genesis to avoid that and steal from the Japanese.

Food for thought: There was a billboard in the episode that said: ‘The Day the Dying Died’. Does this mean rich people will eventually stop dying due to buying the souls of the poor?

We’ve already established that The Saint of Killers has no soul which was one of the reasons he couldn’t get into Heaven. He makes a deal with Jesse that he’ll let them all go if Jesse finds a soul for him. Since the Saint of Killers is an exotic soul type, meaning non-existent, Jesse eventually figures out that he’s probably a match.

It turns out, he’s right. Genesis needed a special person to inhabit, and that’s true with Jesse Custer.

What we don’t know until Jesse hands over the soul crystal and the Saint takes it is that having a soul allows Jesse to use Genesis on him. Now, the Saint of Killers is at Jesse’s mercy. Jesse has him disarm and get into the back of the armored truck. There’s no way he can get out and Jesse drives the truck into a swamp, leaving the Saint inside with no escape.

Jesse losing that little bit of soul doesn’t seem to have helped his decent into the darkness….

On tomorrow’s episode, “Pig”, it looks like we’re dealing with the fallout around The Saint of Killers and Jesse losing a little bit of his soul. Cassidy and Tulip have also found that club that has people shooting at each other, so that will be fun.

Take a look at the clips and stills for “Pig” below!
