Twilight Saga Returns with Girl Power Twist!

October 1, 2014 By Funmbi 11 Comments

I attended the Breaking Dawn Part 2 L.A. premiere back in 2012, and I have to tell you that it was bittersweet: of course I was glad that we’d reached a point where all parts of this series I loved had been translated to film. But at the same time, it was definitely the end of an era. I’m not too embarrassed to admit that there were tears. In the 2 years since BD2 was released, it’s been great having the books, DVDs, and tumblr gifsets to go back to, but I couldn’t help feel that it would be so nice to have something new to anticipate.

Well, my friends, last night our wish was granted!

Stephanie Meyer and Lionsgate are teaming up with Facebook, Women In Film, and Tongal to create and manage a social media campaign to develop and produce a series of short films directed by aspiring female filmmakers.  The campaign, called “The Storytellers–New Creative Voices of The Twilight Saga,” will include films based on a broad spectrum of characters from the Twilight universe, with guidance provided by Meyer’s The Twilight Saga: Official Illustrated Guide.

At least five aspiring female filmmakers will direct short films based on characters from the Twilight universe.  The films will be produced and directed with mentorship from a group of female panelists including: Stephenie Meyer, Kristen Stewart (Twilight, The Runaways), Kate Winslet (Titanic, Divergent), Octavia Spencer (The Help), Jennifer Lee (Frozen), Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight), and Julie Bowen (Modern Family).

Five winning shorts will be financed through production advances, and fans will help select a grand prize winning filmmaker who will receive a cash prize and career opportunities.

This is so exciting! This is a great way to support and empower female filmmakers.

I’m also THRILLED that we’ll be able to see a new take on characters we’ve adored for years. Maybe we’ll learn more about Edward’s pre-vampire life or see Carlisle and Esme’s back (love) story? Maybe we’ll get to see how the Volturi overthrew the Romanian coven to become royals? Or maybe we’ll see more of Taha Aki and the Quileutes’ first contact with vampires and the emergence of the werewolf gene? What stories would you most like to see?

Go HERE to see the full press release and read more details. And if you’re planning on submitting a proposal, let us know!
