Just as Blue Fairy wakes up, the Black Fairy makes one last attempt to keep her silent. Meanwhile, Rumple is determined to locate Gideon’s heart and free him. Get a sneak peek of tonight’s Once Upon a Time.

Once Upon a Time gets better and better as we lead up to the musical episode/CaptainSwan wedding! Last week’s episode focussed on CaptainSwan wedding planning and some Charming Family drama. Meanwhile, we finally saw Zelena’s redemption in an attempt to thwart the Black Fairy for good.
“Where Bluebirds Fly” featured a flashback to young Zelena as she made a new friend, Stanum. He defended Zelena against boys who made fun of her and sought to hurt her. Stanum was especially impressed with how Zelena used her magic for good (e.g. saving a bird’s nest after it fell from a downed tree).
Later, when Zelena was grown, green, and wicked, she had a visit from her old friend Stanum. He needed help breaking free of a curse from the Wicked Witch of the North. The curse was turning Stanum into tin. He needed to find a new heart, the enchanted crimson heart. At first Zelena didn’t want to help… what was in it for her? But when Stanum accused her of being afraid, Zelena decided to help. As they walked through the woods, Stanum tried to appeal to Zelena’s humanity and good nature, but they were interrupted when a fierce lion attacked. Zelena chased the lion and was eventually able to subdue it with help from Stanum and a spell that turned the lion into a coward.
Time was running out and Stanum needed the crimson heart. When Zelena picked it up, the heart began to siphon her magic. She refused to make that sacrifice, even for a friend. So Stanum became a Tin Man, and Zelena took the crimson heart and returned to her lonely life.
In Storybrooke, the Black Fairy approached Zelena at home, even helping herself to Baby Robin. Clearly, BF should have nothing to do with children. BF believed that since Zelena was wicked, they could help one another, especially with the final battle approaching. Zelena replied that she wasn’t afraid of the Black Fairy and her threats.
Meanwhile, the CaptainSwan goodness continued as we got to see them in a moment of domestic bliss (Emma was making pancakes and Killian interrupted her with heated kisses *FLAILS*) But before things could escalate, Snow interrupted. She had her wedding planning binder and wanted to get down to business finding a location. This wedding would give the community pe, despite the impending battle.
Before they could get started, Regina gathered the group (Emma, Killian, Snow, Charming) to hear Zelena’s report of the Black Fairy’s threats. At least now they knew that she was staying in the Dwarf Tunnels. Killian also showed them the piece of wand from Tiger Lily, though they would need the other half.
However, Zelena was impatient and she planned to confront the Black Fairy herself. She asked Belle to watch Robin, while she headed to the Dwarf Tunnels. Soon after, when Regina came by Mr. Gold’s shop for ingredients for a locator spell, she saw Robin there. Regina realized where Zelena had gone and followed her to the Dwarf Tunnels.
When Regina met Zelena, they had a big argument. Zelena was upset that she was still being excluded from the Heroes, especially since she had given up Hades to save them all. When the sisters started to fight, they triggered a rockslide, which trapped them. Zelena continued with her plan to find the Black Fairy and Regina followed her through the tunnels. They came across a significant amount of fairy crystals and wondered what BF would want with light magic. But it was all a trick. The Black Fairy lured Zelena into a trap, using Zelena’s power to weaponize the fairy crystals with dark magic. Now BF could start the final battle.
Regina was very upset and told Zelena that she should just go back to Oz.
Elsewhere, when Henry tried to write it into existence that Emma would win the final battle, it didn’t work. He was frustrated that he couldn’t help anyone or figure out the mystery note he had written while in a trance. With encouragement from David, Henry joined the CaptainSwan wedding planning activities.
First, they went to Granny’s, Snow’s suggestion for the wedding venue. Killian mentioned how romantic it would be to get married on the Jolly Roger; however, Henry reminded him about the potential for seasickness. Besides, Snow argued that Granny’s was a place of so many good memories. But Charming really disagreed. There were some pretty bad memories at Granny’s, like Mary Margaret’s first date with Dr. Whale (“We were cursed!”). Plus, the diner wasn’t at all befitting of a royal wedding. Everyone was pretty shocked by Charming’s response, but went to find a bigger location.
When Charming suggested a destination wedding to the Enchanted Forest, Snow called him out. He didn’t want to rush into the wedding with Gideon and the Black Fairy looming over them. Emma and Killian agreed that it would be best to wait for the right time, and not give into fear.
Regina found the Charmings and told them what happened with Zelena, the Black Fairy, and the fairy crystals. However, Zelena interrupted with a solution. Her magic was tethered to the crystals and if Zelena’s magic was destroyed, the crystals would be useless.
Using the crimson heart (brought by the green tornado) and joined by Regina and Emma, Zelena sacrificed her magic. The fairy crystals were no longer dark. But now they needed the Blue Fairy.
Emma, Regina, and Zelena went to Gold’s shop and Emma was able to restart the Blue Fairy’s heart by crushing one of the crystals into dust and spreading it over her. It was only a matter of time before Blue woke up.
Black Fairy was definitely facing a setback, and if Blue woke up, she’d be able to tell Rumple her darkest secret, the real reason BF gave up her son.
In tonight’s episode “Black Fairy” (written by Jerome Schwartz and Dana Horgan, directed by Alrick Riley):
THE BLACK FAIRY’S BACKSTORY IS REVEALED WHILE RUMPLE’S DESTINY IS CHANGED FOREVER— In flashback, after Rumple’s mother, Fiona, learns from his fairy godmother that his destiny is prophesized, she does everything in her power to keep it from happening. Ultimately, Fiona will have to make a decision that will change the course of both their lives forever. Meanwhile in Storybrooke, Rumple faces a similar dilemma. (via ABC)
Hmmm, why do I have a feeling that Black Fairy becoming dark has something to do with somehow saving Rumple from a similar fate… though it clearly doesn’t work! And we’ve already seen that Rumple is willing to sacrifice himself for Gideon. So, yes, I’m expecting a couple full circle moments.
Take a look at two clips from the upcoming show. In the first clip, just as Blue wakes up and is about to tell the Heroes where they can find the rest of the wand (from Tiger Lily), the Black Fairy and Gideon intervene in a crazy way. And in the second video, Rumple takes (kidnaps) Emma to the dream realm in order to prevent her from killing Black Fairy before he can find Gideon’s heart.

I CANNOT believe BF and Gideon could just impersonate Snow and Charming like that! Where are the real Snow and Charming! And how interesting that we’re trapped in Rumple’s dream. We’ll likely learn some things that he’s not wanting to disclose!
