I cannot wait for The White Princess to premiere next week! Philippa Gregory style historical romance, plus STARZ’s flare for sexy drama? YES PLEASE!

In anticipation of the STARZ Original Limited Series, last night (Wednesday, April 5) the network teamed up with Refinery 29 to host a special New York screening event a the Metrograph Theater.

The White Princess stars Jodie Comer and Jacob Collins-Levy were at the celebration, along with Showrunner/EP Emma Frost.

Naturi Naughton and Lela Loren from hit show Power (returning for its fourth season this summer!) also joined the fun.

Following the screening of the premiere episode of The White Princess, Refinery 29 hosted a Facebook Live panel discussion with Comer, Collins-Levy, and Frost, along with Rachel Fleit (co-founder and CEO of HONOR luxury womenswear brand) and Alice Gao (influencer, storyteller, travel photographer).

The conversation included topics centered on the importance of women in storytelling, female writers, power and gender roles, diversity in television and film, inequality in gender pay, and more.

For example, on heading up an all-female writers room and female directors on The White Princess, Frost said:

“It was obvious to me that it should be an entirely all female writing staff … I said to the English production company, ‘if I work my way through every single female writer that there is and I can’t find enough good writers to start my writers room, THEN I’ll look at the men – well, I didn’t need to do that…There are so many shows that only have male writers, directors – the numbers for women on shows and in the movies are abysmal. There is no reason for that whatsoever. It’s a political choice, but also this story is told from the female point of view so who better to write it than female writers?”

On the experiences of people of color in Tudor England, Frost also remarked:

“I would very much love to … move forward with a historical drama where people of color – women of color particularly – are the central protagonists and to discover some of those stories. [audience applause]”

I am here for that!

To watch the full panel discussion, go HERE. And thanks to STARZ, we have 15 images from last night’s screening to share!

Take a look below, and remember to watch The White Princess when it premieres Sunday, April 16 at 8:00pm ET|PT on STARZ!

About The White Princess:

Drawn from the novel of the same name by Philippa Gregory, and part of The Cousins’ War book series, “The White Princess” sees England ostensibly united by the marriage of Princess Elizabeth of York/Lizzie and King Henry VII, but their personal and political rift runs deep and the divide between them threatens to tear the kingdom apart once again. Rumors circulate that Lizzie’s long-lost brother Prince Richard is alive and planning to take the throne – forcing Lizzie into an impossible choice between her new Tudor husband and the boy who could be her own blood and the rightful York King. “The White Princess” is a tale of power, political divides, family, love and betrayal, which charts one of the most tumultuous times in British history uniquely from the point of view of the women waging the ongoing battle for the English throne.
