SDCC 2016 Interview with Michael Narducci (‘The Originals’)

August 22, 2016 By Funmbi Leave a Comment

The Originals’ Executive Producer Michael Narducci takes us inside Season 3 (including Klamille!) and tells us what we can expect in Season 4.

Since the very beginning The Originals has been such a compelling show.

It’s beyond comprehension to think about what life must be like for immortals; I mean, I can’t even fathom 1,000 years.

But both cast and creators of the show have been so successful in their storytelling that maybe, just maybe, we now have an idea of what it must be like to be a thousand-year-old vampire walking the Earth.

What has been even more remarkable is watching Klaus and the Mikaelsons, supposedly monsters, risk everything to protect their family and home, especially their Hope.

With that said, this past season is really tough for all of our faves on The Originals. There is so much loss and heartbreak (Jackson… Davina… Cami… *cries*).

And even with the end of Season 3, we’re still not sure of the Mikaelsons’ fate.

Klaus suffers after being stabbed with Papa Tunde’s blade, buried in the Garden; Rebekah, Elijah, Freya, and Kol are in limbo, sustained by Klaus’ life force, but with death still very possible; Hayley and Hope are searching for cures to Marcel’s superbite, and who knows what Marcel and will be up to in the mean time.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a chat with someone who could tell us more about the motivation behind Season 3’s more difficult moments and what we can anticipate in Season 4?

At this year’s Comic-Con I had a chance to sit down with The Originals Executive Producer Michael Narducci and do just that!

Watch our interviews below where we talk about Season 3 deaths and expectations for Klaus in Season 4.

***NOTE: As you can imagine, the pressrooms get very loud, making it difficult for the camera to capture our conversations. Therefore, at the bottom of the post, I’ve included a separate audio recording of the whole interview.

What can you tell us about Klaus when we return for Season 4? Is it likely that he’ll be hell-bent on seeking revenge?

According to Narducci, Klaus’ state of mind will definitely be in flux when he awakens next season. Yes, he will be the angry, paranoid baddie we’ve come to know, but at the same time, there will be a shift. Given Klaus’ horrid experiences with his parents, he will be incredibly determined to have a positive relationship with Hope. This desire will fundamentally steer him in another direction. Will Klaus really be that interested in vengeance when his relationship with his daughter is so important?

Can you take us inside the writers’ room and walk us through the decision to kill Davina and Cami this season? when did you know that they would meet their ends?

Narducci says that the writers knew very early on that this would be the season that totally decimates the Mikaelsons. Of course, the prophecy that kicks off the season foretells that the Mikaelsons would all fall, “One by friend, one by foe, and one by family.” Yet, Narducci also says that there’s a broader problem at work here. He asks us to remember in Season 3, Episode 11 where Hayley says to Elijah “loving any of us is a death sentence.” Over and over again, for the last 1,000 years, the Mikaelsons have watched as their loved ones have died. What must that level of pain do to their ability to hold on to any sense of humanity? Things are even more complex because now Klaus has a daughter who is also mortal and the writers want to explore how critical that problem is for him via the loss of other characters, like Cami. At the same time, Narducci is adamant that Cami, even in death, is a true hero. Up until her final moments, she selflessly implores Klaus to be better for Hope.

*takes a moment to dry my tears*

Can you tell us any more about Season 4? What is the underlying theme?

Narducci says that what they want to explore in Season 4 is the idea of a “necessary evil”. The Mikaelsons have been around for a millennia, committed terrible atrocities, and suffered much pain. Is it possible that they’re still alive and in New Orleans at this particular moment to stop an evil that is even greater?

I think the question we all have now is if Marcel is that big baddie that must be taken down.

I really hope not because I’m still (maybe foolishly) holding out hope that Marcel and Klaus might mend fences.

What do you think?

The Originals returns in 2017 on The CW.
