Sassenachs, what is there to say that hasn’t already been said?
After binge-watching Outlander Season 2 during last Saturday’s marathon, we know that as we approach the season finale, there is some serious heartbreak in store.
Despite Jamie and Claire’s best attempts, despite Jamie’s “The Hail Mary” plan to surprise attack the British, history (and Prince Charles) are marching the Jacobites to Culloden. We also know that a distraught and unpredictable Black Jack Randall is lurking about…
Because of the first episode in the season (“Through a Glass, Darkly“), we know that somehow Claire makes it back to Craigh na Dun BEFORE the Battle of Culloden (because she asks the man she comes across about the outcome of the conflict).
We know that, in 1948, Claire is unable to find any evidence that Jamie survives Culloden. And we know Claire is pregnant and agrees to raise her child (a beautiful red-head girl, as seen in “Faith“) with Frank in Boston.
Yet, even knowing these facts doesn’t mitigate the impending heartache… because we don’t know the circumstances that lead Jamie and Claire to separate.
And I don’t know how to survive watching this.
A few weeks ago STARZ announced that the Season 2 finale “Dragonfly in Amber” (written by Toni Graphia and Matthew B. Roberts, directed by Philip John) would be a 90-minute mega episode. We also got this extended synopsis:
Flashing forward to 1968, Claire travels to Scotland with her twenty-year-old daughter, Brianna, and meets Roger Wakefield. Claire visits Lallybroch and Culloden Moor to make peace with the past, while Brianna and Roger bond over researching Randall family history. Claire finally reveals the truth to Brianna about her time travel through the stones, her life in 1700’s Scotland, and Brianna’s true parentage.
The story is intercut with another one back in the 18th century, which happens on the day of the Battle of Culloden. When Jamie’s last ditch attempts to deter The Prince fail, he and Claire come up with a dangerous plan – which Dougal overhears, inciting him to a murderous rage. Jamie must do everything he can to save the ones he loves, even if it means saying goodbye to some–or all–of them.
