PREVIEW: ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6 Finale “The Winds of Winter”

June 26, 2016 By Funmbi Leave a Comment

Jon and Sansa decide on their next steps; Cersei and Loras go on trial; Dany and Tyrion finalize their plans for Westeros. Get a sneak peek of tonight’s Game of Thrones (“The Winds of Winter”), airing at 9:00pm ET|PT on HBO.

I really don’t have the words for how EPIC and SATISFYING last week’s Game of Thrones is. I mean, overall Season 6 has been great in terms of reunions and revenge moments. But “Battle of the Bastards” might be the best episode of television I’ve seen in several years!

After so much uncertainty and loss, the dire wolf finally flies at Winterfell again!

From beginning to end, that battle is insane… all those men and horses and arrows and carnage. But Jon Snow survives it ALL, even being also trampled and buried by his own people!

Yet in the end, it’s Sansa who saves the day. The raven she sends to Littlefinger reaches him in time to rally the Knights of the Vale and come to Jon’s aid.

Then smug and sadistic Ramsay gets his just desserts—first when Jon beats him into a pulp and then when Sansa feeds him to his own hounds. Vengeance is so, so sweet! Yet also, #PoorRickon and #RIPWunWun.

However, I have several concerns. First, will the North remember now? Will they support Sansa and Jon’s claim of Winterfell as Wardens of the North?

Also, what in the world is Littlefinger expecting from Sansa in exchange for his help? Perhaps he intends to marry her and become the King in the North, himself. (UGH!)

What are the Lannisters and Freys going to do when they find out Jon and Sansa have reclaimed Winterfell?

Interestingly, I read an article yesterday that has stuck with me and it suggests a Jon and Sansa marriage as a solution to all these problems. In fact, since their reunion, it’s possible Jonsa has become canon.

Individually, Jon and Sansa don’t have a strong claim to Winterfell, but a marriage would strengthen it. They would also keep Littlefinger and other potential suitors away from Sansa. Finally, if Sansa is pregnant, they can raise her child as the heir to Winterfell.

I know… ew, incest. But this is Game of Thrones, so if Jonsa happens, we shouldn’t be too surprised. Also, if R+L=J, they’re cousins, instead of half-siblings.

The more I think about it, the more I (not so) low-key ship these two. The article is way more convincing than I am…articulate, well-argued, and well-supported. Read it HERE at Hypable and let me know what you think!

Then in Meereen, another epic battle is waged and coalition formed. Dany, her dragons, and the Dothraki completely eliminate the Masters as rivals. In the process, Dany acquires an armada of ships. But when Yara and Theon finally arrive and make their proposition, Dany has everything she needs to make her way to Westeros.

I am HERE for the Dany/Yara team—both are kickass women who *need* to the Queen. I find it interesting that Dany insists on making sure they have a positive impact on the world, even demanding that once Yara is queen in the Iron Islands, she stops their raids. (This seems to be a turnaround from earlier in the episode when Tyrion accuses Dany of being Mad King-esque in her rage and decimation.)

In any event, once Dany gets to Westeros I really feel like it’s game over! Nothing can beat dragons… add in the Dothraki and Unsullied. and Dany is unstoppable. Thoughts?

Tonight is the Season 6 Finale and like last week, HBO has shared images, but no episode synopsis. However, thanks to the Entertainment Weekly Spoiler Room, we have some insight into “The Winds of Winter” (written by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, directed by Miguel Sapochnik):

Unlike some of the Thrones finales that aired after action-packed episodes, this season-ender definitely does notslow down the pace. You can expect pretty much every major character to make an appearance, with Cersei and Ser Loras’ trial serving as a pivotal centerpiece that will change King’s Landing politics next year. But the real question hanging over this last hour is whether Bran will return to the Tower of Joy. Here’s hoping!

OK, OK, OK! And the images confirm that Loras has his trial, Jaime spends some time with the Freys, and Bran will at least make an appearance. The preview trailer also indicates that Littlefinger will make his demands known, and in Meereen, Dany and Tyrion finish their preparations to make their way to Westeros.
