FILM REVIEW/GIVEAWAY: Nicholas Sparks’ ‘The Choice’—3.5 STARS

February 4, 2016 By T.J. Leave a Comment

New York Times bestselling author Nicholas Sparks and Lionsgate team up to bring us the film adaptation for The Choice just in time for Valentine’s Day! Check out my 3.5 STARS review. (Contains slight spoilers.)
Also, enter to win a Choice poster signed by Teresa Palmer, Benjamin Walker, and Nicholas Sparks!

It’s February and romance is in the air for many! Whether you recently became a victim of cuffing season or you are the “I love love!” person twirling in the street, it is great time to go to the theater and take in a romantic film, and Lionsgate’s The Choice just might be the flick for you.

When given the opportunity to see an early screening of The Choice I can honestly say I wasn’t overly excited to attend. I’m not the person running to the box office to take in romantic dramas or comedies. This girl is mostly about the action movies. I mean, John Wick 2 couldn’t come fast enough! So even though I was apprehensive about how invested I was going to be in the film, I was pleasantly surprised that The Choice did entertain my often cold heart.

The Choice is the cinematic adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel with the same title. The romantic drama stars Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) as Travis Shaw, alongside Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies) as Gabby Holland, and it takes you through the evolution of their friendship turned epic love.

From the first encounter between Gabby and Travis, most audience members will see their attraction. The chemistry between the two is palpable. It was reminiscent of that of Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in The Notebook. When sexy times popped off between Gabby and Travis, I noticed plenty of folks in the screening get a little hot and bothered. Honestly, I got the vapors at least once. Palmer and Walker’s comedic timing was impeccable, and even though I wasn’t a fan of how the characters fell for one another, the actor’s portrayals ensured that it was evident the couple truly suited each other.

Due to how well Palmer and Walker brought their characters to life, The Choice might forever make me swoon inside when I hear someone say “bother me,” in the same way Ghost and Star Wars are responsible for evoking ALL THE FEELS when the phrases “Ditto!” and “I know.” are said. Supporting actors Maggie Grace, Tom Welling, and Tom Wilkinson are fantastic in their respective roles. Welling has so gloriously bulked up that I want to plead for him to reprise his role as Superman in the DC Comics TV adaptations. To me, this cast appeared to be the most diverse of all the Sparks’s book-to-film adaptations. *THUMBS UP*

Sparks’s love of creating stories set in North Carolina helped me sit back and enjoy the adaptation. The coastal backdrop kept me from rolling my eyes and crossing my arms in annoyance at moments that felt a bit rushed. With a running time of an hour and 50 minutes the film could have flushed out some moments more effectively, like the characters disagreements on spiritual beliefs.

Overall, if you even slightly like romance films, adore eye candy, or want to be lulled into serenity by spectacular cinematic shots of coastal North Carolina, then hit up the box office this weekend and take in a viewing of The Choice.

Thanks to Lionsgate, we’re giving away the official theatrical film poster signed by Teresa Palmer, Benjamin Walker, and Nicholas Sparks. Plus, a copy of the tie-in novel and bookmark on Twitter. ENTER BELOW:

The Choice Synopsis:

When feisty medical student Gabby Holland moves in next door to perennial ladies’ man Travis Shaw, they embark on a surprising romantic journey neither imagined possible. Travis has always believed a serious relationship would cramp his easygoing lifestyle, while Gabby is preparing to settle down with her long-term boyfriend—until an irresistible attraction between the unlikely couple upends both of their well-planned lives. Spanning a decade and tracing the evolution of a love affair that is ultimately tested by life’s most defining events, this story features a memorable ensemble of friends and family in Sparks’s beloved North Carolina setting, culminating with the question that every couple must ask themselves: how far would you go to keep the hope of love alive?
