Runway Report: 5 Big Trends from Pre-Fall 2016

January 27, 2016 By Team WSN Leave a Comment

We compile the hottest trends spotted on the runways for the Pre-Fall 2016 collections. Inspirational designers include Alexander Wang, Stella McCartney, Michael Kors, Versace, Tommy Hilfiger, and many more.

If fashion is your forte, you know that new collections are shown months–even a year–in advance (we’re looking at you, Resort). So although we’re just heading into the thick of winter, the fashion houses have reminded us that pre-fall clothing should be on our minds instead of ice-repellent threads.

After surveying runway photos from some of the most well-known as well as up-and-coming designers, there were quite a few trends that took center stage for Pre-Fall 2016. With collections being shown in New York, London, Milan, and Paris, we’re pretty confident in our runway takeaway that brings you the five biggest (and wearable) trends from pre-fall fashion for 2016.

1. Night Moves

No longer reserved just for the bedroom or underneath your sheer dresses: Slips have made their debut as a ready-to-wear clothing item all on their own. Stealing the show with sultry lace details, slip dresses were seen from Rag & Bone and Nina Ricci – to list a couple collections – and they took more than just the form of spaghetti strap. Some looks even layered the slip dress over a boxy oxford and underneath oversized coats.

2. That ‘70s Trend

It’s almost impossible to be surprised by the ‘70s-style looks seen at Tory Burch and many of the other designers’ shows for pre-fall. If you take a look at fashion site WomanWithin, you’ll see runway-inspired mid-length, patterned dresses similar to those from the era. The throwback trend has been holding steady for a couple seasons now, and fashion forecasters aren’t seeing an end in sight. Fashionista notes, “…We’re starting to wonder if it’s even a trend anymore given its prevalence over so many seasons.”

3. The Cat’s Meow

The appeal of big cat prints like leopard and cheetah has held tight within the industry throughout decades, and it’s not slowing down this year, either. As Vogue reports, leopard coats are undoubtedly taking over for pre-fall, showing up in Alexander Wang’s, Stella McCartney’s, Calvin Klein’s, and Coach 1941’s collections—to name a few. The best part about this print is its stylish sass and instant class, and it’s easy to match many outfits.

4. Playing Peekaboo

A trend that can be employed through spring, summer, and well into fall, shoulder cutouts on tops are sure to be seen throughout the year. Spotted at Versace, J. Mendel, Ohne Titel, Opening Ceremony, and more, this peekaboo detail was found on everything from collared blouses to chic jumpsuits to fitted sweater dresses. It’s safe to say that we’ll be seeing a lot of cold shoulders this year.

5. Fuzz is the Buzz

Another trend keeping its foothold within the forefront of the industry is the influx of fur we saw from last fall. As it has made its way fiercely into this winter, Pre-Fall 2016 collections from J.W. Anderson, Sonia Rykiel, Rochas, and Carven are proving that fur is still the fabric of the moment. You can flip through their collections in this Harper’s Bazaar slideshow to get the full fur effect.
