FIRST LOOK: ‘Race’ Based on the Incredible True Story of Jesse Owens

November 27, 2015 By T.J. Leave a Comment

Coming to theaters nationwide in February 2016 is Focus Features’ film Race, based on the incredible true story of Olympic gold medal champion Jesse Owens.

The story of American track and field athlete and four-time Oympic gold medalist James Cleveland “Jesse” Owens is being told in Focus Features’ new film Race. This inspiring film stars Stephan James as Jesse Owens and tells the story of how Owens became one of the greatest athletes in history.

Race shares Jesse Owens’ courageous journey to compete and win four gold medals in the 1936 Olympics set in Berlin, during the time that Adolf Hilter was spouting Nazi propaganda of Aryan racial superiority/supremacy. Not only were people being oppressed across the pond by Hilter, but segregation and racial injustice was at an utmost in the United States. Race details how Jesse Owens had to navigate these extremely turbulent and soul-crushing times while also following his dream by embracing and later showcasing his talent.

As mentioned, Race stars Stephan James as Jesse Owens; you might recognize Stephan from Degrassi: Next Generation where he portrayed Julian Williams, or more recently as John Lewis in Selma. The films was directed by Stephen Hopkins and written by Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, and Race also stars Jason Sudeikis, Jeremy Irons, Carice van Houten, Shanice Banton, and William Hurt.

Now take your first look into Race with the below trailer for the film:

Based on the incredible true story of Jesse Owens, the legendary athletic superstar whose quest to become the greatest track and field athlete in history thrusts him onto the world stage of the 1936 Olympics, where he faces off against Adolf Hitler’s vision of Aryan supremacy. “Race” is an enthralling film about courage, determination, tolerance, and friendship, and an inspiring drama about one man’s fight to become an Olympic legend.
