BOOK REVIEW: 'Bewitched' by Daisy Prescott—4.5 Stars

I’m always on the lookout for a good novella! During this time of year, real life is always driving me crazy, so finding a short(ish) and sweet treat to enjoy is a priority. When I heard that the darling Daisy Prescott was diving into New Adult with her new novella Bewitched, I knew I had to get my hands on it ASAP.

If you’re familiar with Daisy’s best-selling adult contemporary romance Modern Love Story series, you know she’s a PRO at developing amazingly relatable characters: they’ll make you belly-laugh and swoon you right off your feet! Bewitched absolutely accomplishes this too. This story is perfect, especially during this time of year…with Autumn descending and Halloween leading us into the upcoming holiday season, there’s magic in the air. Bewitched embodies this spirit, and I was smiling from beginning to end!

Madison Bradbury is a junior at Hawthorne College in Salem, Massachusetts. Yes, she’s familiar with the town’s witchy history; she even had an ancestor that survived the witch trials. However, Maddy would rather focus on school and her love of literature and leave the witchcraft to tourists. This isn’t to say that she doesn’t want any magic in her life. Finding some romance to rejuvenate her love life would definitely help, and Maddy has a candidate in mind—Andrew Wildes.

Andrew is in one of her upper-level English classes, and Maddy can’t help but notice how handsome and mysterious he is. But how can she get him to notice her back? When Maddy’s best friend Sam suggests a trip to the local Wiccan shop for some Samhain supplies, she agrees to go. What Maddy doesn’t expect is for the proprietor to talk her into taking a love spell. And she certainly doesn’t plan to actually cast the spell, but Maddy is curious and has nothing to lose. Shocker, the spell works (!!!), or so it seems. But as Maddy and Andrew spend more time together and their feelings deepen, how can she make sure that it’s all real?

I adore Maddy, and from the beginning, she feels like my SoulSister. Maddy is smart, sassy, quirky, and (like me) has a slightly inappropriate love of Mr. Darcy/Colin Firth. I particularly enjoy her relationship with Sam. Just as Maddy says:

She’s the blonde yin to my dark yang. The tall to my short. The fun to my serious. The nutty peanut butter to my sweet jam.

These two are HILARIOUS together and you can tell that over the last few years, they’ve had some pretty fun adventures. I love how Sam pushes Maddy to take a chance…after all, sometimes we all need a little push.

And even though the story is told from Maddy POV, we still get to know Andrew well enough that he thoroughly swoons us off our feet. He always seems to be at the right place at the right time. As we learn more about him—that he loves to read, has a sweet-tooth, believes in magic, can quote Mr. Darcy—like Maddy, we fall head over heels:

I meet his beautiful brown eyes, which remind me of warm melted milk chocolate. There’s a chocolate I’d like to die by. Death by Andrew. A familiar feeling flutters low in my belly and I cross my legs. It’s been ages since anything fluttered.

I hear you, Maddy! And what’s even better is that Andrew really seems to feel the same way:

…We kiss like no one can see us, like we are the last two people alive, or the first people ever to fall in love. We kiss like we’re falling in love. My head spins as the earth shifts beneath my feet. Strong arms steady me. Unable to catch my breath, I break off the kiss, nuzzling my nose in his neck. This is falling in love…

*SWOONS*SWOONS*SWOONS*

But there is this pesky potential problem of the love spell. What if Andrew is only enchanted? What happens when/if the spell wears off?

No spoilers, but there’s a VERY interesting twist in the end that leads us to a super charming and magical HEA *BEAMING*

I recommend Bewitched to contemporary romance/New Adult fans who are looking for some witchy whimsy in their lives. Maddy, Andrew, and their Hawthorne buddies will make your heart smile and leave you wanting more. There’s comedy, witty banter, and lucky for us, Daisy has promised that we can expect more soon! (Incidentally, I’d REALLY love to have some Andrew POV of when he first notices *NUDGE-NUDGE-WINK-WINK* Daisy!)
