STARZ Renews ‘Power’ after Record-Setting Season 2 Premiere

June 12, 2015 By Funmbi Leave a Comment

STARZ is bringing Power back for a third season after the Season 2 premiere on June 6, 2015 broke previous viewership records. Creator and executive producer Courtney Kemp Agboh will remain as showrunner.

Last Saturday Power returned for it’s second season, and the premiere episode was intense! Major secrets were revealed (Angela—Lela Loren—being an Assistant U.S. Attorney), while others remained firmly underwraps (Kanan’s—50 Cent—recent release from prison and his plan to get Ghost—Omari Hardwick—out of the way). Fans showed Power a lot of love—it blew past previous highs with season premiere/total weekend Live+SD viewership results that established new record highs at STARZ:

1.43 million Live+SD viewers made the second season premiere episode of “Power” destination viewing on Saturday, June 6 at 9PM ET|PT, the most ever for a STARZ Original series season premiere episode.1

Tripled the original “Power” audience from June 2014 series premiere (462,000) with growth of nearly 1 million viewers since “Power” first debuted on STARZ.2

The first episode of season two of “Power” grew by 32% from the season one finale (1.08 million).3

3.62 million Live+SD gross weekend viewers made “Power’s” second series premiere the most watched episode ever for a STARZ Original series, besting episode five from “Spartacus: Vengeance” (3.33 million weekend viewers).4

Power is now an even bigger hit with African-American audiences, as the season two premiere was the #1 show on all of cable television on Saturday among African-Americans (1.11 million) and #6 for the week of  June 1-7 on a viewership projections basis.7

Additional demographic data shows that Power played well with younger audiences (54% A18-49) and across gender lines with a new viewership surge with women (52% W18+) in comparison to season one which had a slight male skew (49%, M18+; 45% W18+).8

Fresh off this record-setting second season premiere, this week STARZ announced Power would be picked up for a third season. Production on the 10 episodes is scheduled to begin in September 2015 at the series’ home base at Steiner Studios in Brooklyn.

Creator and executive producer Courtney Kemp Agboh shared her excitement: “I am thrilled to learn that season three of Power has been officially ordered by STARZ. It is an honor to work with Chris Albrecht, Carmi Zlotnik, Ken Segna and the whole STARZ team.  Their support has been steadfast from the beginning, and I look forward to a bright future together.”

Similarly, executive producer and star Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson stated: “Power is a project I have been passionate about since day one. I am glad the audience loves the show as much as we do, and we are just getting started.”

This morning STARZ also announced that they’ve has signed Courtney Kemp Agboh to an exclusive overall deal. Under the pact, Kemp Agboh will continue to serve in her current role on Power, and presumably develop future series for the cable network.

Power airs Saturdays at 9:00pm ET|PT, so make sure to come back for weekly sneak peeks and tune into STARZ to watch the new episodes!
