RECAP: ‘Preacher’ Season Four, Episode Six “The Lost Apostle”

September 2, 2019 By Katie Leave a Comment

The apocalypse is barreling forward as planned, and everyone is in their place. Is it by their choice, though, or God’s plan? Here’s our recap of “The Lost Apostle”!

“The Lost Apostle” opens with God re-watching videos of himself and his devoted followers. In this case, Abraham is on the verge of sacrificing his son when God stops him. Abraham kneels before God after he stops the sacrifice and says that he loves God so much. God rewinds this moment again and again.

He longs for a time when he was blindly loved and worshipped.

After he turns the television off, he sits at his worktable and places a sticker on a replica nuclear warhead.

The side-plot of this episode is the New Zealand government accusing the Australian government of killing the Deputy Prime Minister. This happened several episodes ago at Masada, but God and the Grail are counting on the revelation to be what creates the spark to start the apocalypse.

Meanwhile, Jesus and Hitler are still in negotiations to decide which souls go to Heaven and which souls go to Hell. Neither one is willing to budge, and it creates an impasse that Herr Starr can’t even break through.

Luckily, he’s called away suddenly to go to Australia before he can yell at them too much. It seems God needs him because Phase 2 is starting with or without Jesus and Hitler’s negotiations stalling. Once he reaches God, Starr finally comes clean about Humperdoo.

“You know I lost him, don’t you? That’s why you keep asking.”

God says that he hopes Starr finds him. He loves Humperdoo very much. In the distance, a dingo begins to run at full speed toward Starr. God tells Starr about the positive attributes of the dingo right before it tackles Starr to the ground and chews off his balls.

In a very Genesis voice, God says:

“Don’t ever cross me again.”

While this has been happening, Tulip and Cassidy have been on a search for Jesse. They found Eugene at a police station where he turned himself for killing Jesse, and figure out that the Saint of Killers now has him. For a good portion of the episode, they stay on his trail. They miss him but find his handiwork in a series of dead bodies that show them the way.

At a diner, Cassidy asks Tulip if she read the letter that Jesse left. It may leave them a clue to where he was going. She finally admits that she hasn’t read it. Cass tells her he can read it, skip the personal parts, and see if there are any clues. Tulip hands over the letter, and after he reads it, he tells her:

“It won’t help.”

Tulip leaves the diner, feeling upset about what could have been in the letter, but she finds an RV across the parking lot. In it, jazz is playing loudly and Tulip sees God’s favorite Dalmatian costume. She’s found God, and she’s also found where he’s going to meet Jesse, The Lost Apostle desert.

She finds Cassidy, and they set off in a plane to find Jesse, who is being escorted by the Saint of Killers in the desert. Tulip drops some fire retardant on him, and it allows Jesse to run away, jumping in the low flying plane.

During Jesse’s time with the Saint of Killers, they posed the question that I feel will end the series.

Why does God do what he does?

The Saint wants to kill God because of what he did to his family. Jesse wants to kill God for everything he’s done to him. Cassidy wants God to explain the reason for The Big Lebowski. Everyone wants to understand God’s plan, and some want him dead for it.

Before Jesse’s rescued by Tulip, he tells the Saint to remember that when he’s in his sights again, to leave God to Jesse.

Once Jesse is on the plane, God is down below and detonates the nuke. This is the spark between Australia and New Zealand to start the apocalypse, but also a way to kill Jesse. The plane is bounced around by the explosion and the door knocked off.

Jesse flies out the opened door, but Cassidy grabs his arm. He holds on as best he can with his arm burning in the sun, and Jesse tells Cass to let him go, but Cass won’t.

Finally, Jesse tells Cassidy to tell Tulip to read the letter, and he uses Genesis to make Cassidy release his arm. Jesse falls to his death, and the prologue from the first episode of the season comes to pass.

All that being said, since Jesse used Genesis, will the Saint of Killers know where to find him now? If so, can he bring Jesse back? Is Jesse dead to begin with? Or will the Saint have the opportunity to confront God?

There are only four episodes left in the series! What are your thoughts on “The Lost Apostle”?
