‘The Flash’ Cast & Creators Talk CRISIS at SDCC 2019

July 29, 2019 By Funmbi Leave a Comment

CRISIS is coming, which means major things for the new season of The Flash. The show’s cast and creators chat with us about the impending shake-up…

Since the Season 1 of The Flash, we knew this moment was coming… The newspaper heading declaring that The Flash/Barry Allen “vanishes in CRISIS.” And due to some (ok, several) changes in the timeline, that date is finally upon us: December 10, 2019. I don’t know about other The Flash fans, but I’m a hot mess thinking about what the post-CRISIS world looks like. What does this mean for my WestAllen?!

Well, at this year’s Comic-Con we talked all about this with the show’s cast and new showrunner.

In our interview with Hartley Sawyer (0:05 – 5:35), he discusses the Ralph/Cisco dynamic, especially now that Cisco has given up his powers and Sherloque has departed. Ralph will definitely be stepping up in the new season to show his leadership skills. Other than that, we’ll continue to see more of Ralph as a detective/PI and how good he is at his work. Hartley also teases that Sue Dibny is coming soon!

Our favorite Tom Cavanagh (5:55 – 12:35) eagerly tells us that “No one’s ever gone!” So, we can expect another Wells to show up sooner or later. Tom discusses the process of coming up with the variation of Harrison Wells characters every season. With Sherloque, the inspiration was a master detective tracking down Reverse Flash: “me tracking down me.” He found it delightful to play. With that said, Tom also enjoys coming back to put the yellow suit on again and play Reverse Flash, and adds something delicious. Yes, Tom will direct again this season. He had a blast directing the 100th episode and loves working with the cast and crew and the genuine relationships.

New showrunner Eric Wallace (12:52 – 17:42) is excited to step into the role. He teases that Nora’s death will bring the team together, especially Barry and Nora. How do you save the world from CRISIS while mourning? While there are no immediate plans for Nora’s return, as a time travel show, never say never to someone showing up again. They’d love to have Jessica Parker Kennedy back, and during Season 6here will be teasers of how Nora might return.

As we’ve speculated, CRISIS is shaking things up and divides the season into 3 parts: the dread and anxiety of pre-CRISIS, CRISIS itself, and a post-CRISIS world where there are no limits. This allows them to change the rules about what The Flash episodes can look like and the types of villains the team will face. More comic-bookiness is coming!

Danielle Panabaker (18:00 – 23:12) tells us that Season 6 is a huge season for Killer Frost and her development. Last year we saw how Killer Frost came to be, driven by Caitlin’s relationship with her father. This year is more about Killer Frost and her developing relationships with Team Flash. This also means a new costume! Danielle loves the new Killer Frost supersuit, which has been in the works for over a year. Danielle also shares that she was grateful for the chance to direct last season and she will direct episode 6 in Season 6, as well.

In our interview with Candice Patton (23:30 – 28:45), she reflects on how Iris deals with constant trauma. Nora’s death is very fresh… then turn to deal with CRISIS. But she believes there’s always potential for joy and happiness. The family and their love is still central. Also in Season 6, Iris focuses more on her journalism with the expansion of her own newspaper.

Finally, Candice tells us that, while the show is relying on directors who understand the world of The Flash, she’s also pushing for more opportunities diverse folks behind the camera, especially Black Women. Before the series ends, Candice would like to try directing, but for now, her passion is for acting and this character.

The Flash returns for Season 6 on Tuesday, October 8, at 8/7c on The CW.
