DCTV REVIEW: ‘Black Lightning’ Season 2, Episode 8 “Exodus”

December 6, 2018 By Katie Leave a Comment

On Black Lightning, Khalil and Jennifer are on the run and trying to work stuff out, but everyone is on their trail! Here’s our review of “Exodus”!

Since you can’t run away broke, Jennifer and Khalil go to Club 100 for some money to fund their getaway. In a smart move, Khalil leaves Jennifer in the care and is the only one that goes inside. Once in, he tries to tell them that he’s collecting the money they owe a day early. They call him on his nonsense, and a shootout starts.

It turns out Tobias put a bounty on his head.

Khalil ends up getting the money and runs outside as people chase and shoot at him. Jennifer hears the gunshots and comes to his help, using her powers to save his ass.

Back at Gambi’s, Anissa tells her parents that Khalil left a text for Jen and she saw it. Jefferson is fuming mad that Jen ran off with Khalil. He immediately goes looking for her, and Lynn goes to Henderson.

All of Freeland will be looking for these two soon.

They’re in the car and she hotwires it. Wants to call her parents, but he’s adamant that she doesn’t do that. So much so that he raises his hand at her before telling her that they’ll go to his Aunt’s house. Jennifer isn’t a wilting flower, though. When they get to his aunt’s house, she tells him:

“You snap at me again, and Tobias is gonna be last person you have to worry about. I’ll light your ass up.”

In a goodwill gesture, Khalil gives Jennifer a burner phone he bought at a gas station, and she loses a little bit of her anger.

Jennifer ends up cutting off Khalil’s hair and he opens up to her about having a future.

“It’s just that I don’t know, running was my ticket out of here, and I was gonna take you with me, but then that bullet struck my spine. Going to the Olympics, I mean, everything it all got shattered. I just tripped.”

“Well, you got your wish. Look at us. We’re running now.”

“Hey, the truth is, I don’t really care if we’re running, as long as I’m with you.”

Jennifer finds a spot on his head and wonders what it could be or if Tobias put it here…

Jefferson and Anissa go to Club 100 and get a little info about Khalil and Jennifer. As they’re leaving, Anissa gets a call from Jen.

“Hello?

“It’s me, Harriet.”

She can’t keep Anissa on the line long enough to get a location trace, though. Gambi can get it within forty miles, but that’s as close as he can. Gambi’s going to keep a look out for the traffic cams.

Meanwhile, Anissa’s not letting it go that he faked his death. He tells her he just wanted to protect them, but Anissa calls out the fact that he lied about being connected to the ASA or that Tobias was alive.

He tells her that she didn’t tell her dad stuff, and sometimes they keep stuff from people they love to protect them, and that’s what he did.

“Uncle Gambi, thank you. I know that was you who was looking out for us in those woods.”

“Always.”

Annnnd we have forgiveness.

Lynn’s at the house and she’s drinking and searching Jennifer’s room for any clue as to where she might have gone or anything to do with Khalil. She’s throwing clothes out of the closest when Jefferson comes in and stops her. After she cries herself to sleep, Jeff puts her to bed, and Anissa shows up.

Jefferson tells her that she should have told him about the text. If she did, this might not have happened. Anissa pulls out the big guns and tells him that they treated her like a prisoner, and that’s why she reached out to Khalil in the first place.

“Are you blaming this on me?”

“What? No, but if you had told us, then maybe we…”

“Wow, wow! Okay. Did you ever stop and think why she was talking to Khalil in the first place? Hmm? Maybe it had something to do with the fact that, I don’t know you and Mom never let her out the house, that you treated her like she was some kinda prisoner.”

“Wait, we didn’t treat her like a prisoner. We were trying to protect her.”

“No, you were just trying to control her. You acted like she was some kind of freak or a monster! All your rules, your quotes, and all of your phone check-ins It was too much, Dad. Too damn much! You drove her away just like you did me.”

I don’t understand this. Jefferson has been nothing but supportive, loving, and caring for his children.

The next day, Khalil’s momma comes to visit and tells Lynn that if Khalil’s smart then he would take Jennifer to his aunt’s house on the outskirts of town.

—

Over at Khalil’s mom’s apartment, Tobias shows up to tell her to call her son and find out where he is, but she tells him that he’ll have to kill her first. Lucky for her, Tobias has a “no mama” rule, so he’s not going to kill her.

“You’re a strong black woman, I can tell. How’d you end up with such a weak ass son?”

Later on, Tobias is playing chess by himself and talking to a portrait of his sister. He decides that he’s going to change things from now on if they go wrong. I guess this is his version of “if you want something done right, do it yourself” pep talk.

It doesn’t start out that way, though, because Tobias calls in an old friend to find Khalil. She seems to have a bit of a past with him, but agrees to track Khalil down.

Of course, she goes directly to the front door of his aunt’s house, and a fight ensues. Jefferson breaks it up right before she hurts Khalil, and while this woman is distracted by Anissa, Jennifer takes Khalil and runs out the back door.

They get away, but so does Tobias’ hit woman.

Once they’re away, Jennifer realizes that the bump on Khalil’s head could be a tracker. That’s why she felt the electricity when they kissed. After testing out her powers, she uses them to burn out the tracker.

When they kiss again, she doesn’t feel the electricity. They end up running through the woods and hiding while Black Lightning gets close to them. When he disappears from site, they get out of the brush and run away.

At Tobias’ apartment, he gets a call from his assassin and she tells him that she lost them, but she’ll get back on their trail. She blames him for having to fight two metas instead of just Khalil, and when she says that Black Lightning and Thunder showed up, Tobias starts thinking.

First the school then the Seahorse Motel?

The Pierce girls seem to be connected to Black Lightning…
