RECAP: ‘Preacher’ Season Three Finale “The Light Above”

August 29, 2018 By Katie Leave a Comment

Preacher ended season three with a few gasps and three big revelations. Here’s our recap of “The Light Above”!

There was a lot going on in the season finale of Preacher, “The Light Above”. I wanted to narrow it down to the three biggest revelations/changes that we’ll have to deal with in season four, but I couldn’t leave out T.C. or Jody.

That moment in The Tombs when T.C. decides to stay as Jesse burns down everything was one that actually surprised me this season. He was the only one on the show aware of how horrible a person he was and how he didn’t need to be let loose on the real world. His decision in The Tombs was hinted at over the season with T.C. saying once before that he didn’t need to be outside Angelville.

What led to T.C.’s decision was the fight that had been gearing up all season. Jesse finally beat Jody and killed him. He didn’t use Genesis either. Right before Jody dies, he tells Jesse that he’s proud of him for finally beating him in a fight.

With T.C. and Jody gone, I want to move on to the three major plot points of “The Light Above” and how that could change things for next season.

Hitler running Hell

We knew he was looking for a leadership position, but I definitely never expected this change of status for him.

Over the course of the episode, the Saint of Killers is very focused on his daughter’s death and the crows that were sent to peck out her eyes. Thanks to the Angel of Death, it’s been on his mind a lot.

Once he gets Hitler and Eugene back to Hell and receives his weapons, he confronts Satan about it. Satan tells him that it was actually God’s idea and he was just in on the meeting. The Saint pulls his gun on Satan, causing him to turn around and face him. That’s when the Saint of Killers pulls the trigger and shoots Satan in the head, killing him.

The Saint of Killers tells Eugene to come with him because they’re leaving Hell, and after they walk away, Hitler moves behind Satan’s desk.

Instead of questioning what’s he’s doing, the Angel of Death asks if she can get him anything.

God is missing (still) and Hitler is in charge of Hell.

Super.

Cassidy is taken by The Grail

Cassidy discovered Eccarius’ secret and helped all his followers kill him, and then they were faced with that age-old question after you’ve accomplished something…

What next?

Cassidy tells them to go out into the world, but before anyone can do that, Hoover shows back up. He tells them that The Grail wasn’t a good place for him, and he wants to be with people that are like him. Cass welcomes him with open arms, and Hoover hands him an umbrella and still has one for himself.

The house begins to shake and Hoover tells him to open the umbrella. Cassidy does and almost immediately, the house disppears and sunlight pours in, killing nearly all the vampires in the house.

The Grail comes in and takes Cassidy.

Next season, Tulip and Jesse will probably spend most of their time trying to get him back from Starr who’s really pissed at Jesse about not allowing him to wear a hat anymore.

Oh, and Starr realizes that Hoover is really a vampire and pulls his umbrella hat off and kills him. RIP Hoover. Here’s hoping The Grail can find someone else as incompetent and loyal as you.

Jesse killed Gran’ma

The most important thing that happened on “The Light Above” was Jesse facing down with Gran’ma.

Now that he has Genesis, there’s really not anything she can do to hurt him. He told her to free him from his debt (which she did), he told her to free Tulip (which she did), he told her to destory the souls they stole for her (which she did), but when he was about to go in for the kill, she revealed a game changing detail.

She made a deal with the devil.

If she dies by Jesse’s hand, she’ll go to Heaven and Jesse will go to Hell in her place.

At first, Jesse decides that making her destroy the souls is enough, and she’ll die a slow death on her own since T.C. and Jody are both dead. Before he leaves Angelville, though, he turns around and goes back inside.

There’s no way he can allow his Gran’ma to live after how she’s treated him, but more importantly, how she killed his parents. Jesse straps Gran’ma into her own chair, turns the machine on, and leaves. Her soul gets sucked out, and she dies alone.

—

With God telling Tulip to get Jesse to stop messing up his plans, Satan’s death and Hitler running Hell, and Cass a prisoner of The Grail, Jesse will have a lot to worry about next season, and going to Hell won’t be one of those things.

We’ll also have to wait and see if the Saint of Killers finds him again, and does he want to kill Jesse or does he want to try and figure out a way to get to Heaven? Eugene is also looking for answers, too.

Jesse knew he was in Hell but never tried to get him? Awkward.
