RECAP: ‘Preacher’ Season 3, Episode 9 “Schwanzkopf”

August 24, 2018 By Katie Leave a Comment

Preacher topped itself with “Schwanzkopf”. If you were looking for gore, violence, a dash of disgusting it was in this episode. On the flip side, we saw complex character growth in those moments. Here’s our recap!

Let’s start at the top shall we?

Tulip

When we last saw Tulip, Jody, and Featherstone, the Angel of Death had taken Featherstone in Tulip’s place and was taking her to Hell. Well, Jody and Tulip realized that Featherstone had the case with all the souls. In “Schwanzkopf”, Jody and Tulip go to where the bus is picking them up and try and get the case back.

Everything goes pretty much according to plan until Tulip realizes that she can’t let the Angel of Death take Featherstone to Hell, so she tells the Angel of Death that neither of them are Tulip O’Hare, so she should let her go.

Before they can both get away, Eugene pops his head up and starts yelling Tulip’s name from the bus. Tulip runs, but the Angel of Death catches her and Tulip has a seat on the bus to Hell.

Of course, they try to escape. Even that little bitch Hitler, who is convinced his SS troop will come save him. In the end, they actually come through and blow the bus off the road in an attempt to save Hitler.

I really enjoy this show a lot, but I absolutely hate that anything dealing with Hitler is on screen during primetime. If the Nazi/Hitler storyline could just die, I’d be fine with that.

Cassidy

Cassidy had confronted Eccarius in the previous episode, and it didn’t go well. In this one, Cass doubles down and tells Eccarius that he’s going to tell the people that follow him about his lying ways. This forces Eccarius to make a not-so-difficult decision and call out Cassidy as a liar and someone who plans to betray them.

They nail Cassidy to the pool table and open a curtain. The sunlight is far away, but Eccarius says that it will give Cass time to change his mind if he wants to…or he’ll burn.

Later in the afternoon, an older woman comes in to clean up the room. That’s when Cass asks her if she’ll do a favor for him:

Call Lisa and tell her that he’s sorry.

We all know what this woman will find after she calls…

Jesse

At Grail Headquarters, the Allfather is about to blast Genesis into Humperdoo and bring forth the new Messiah. Jesse convinces him that he should be able to die on his knees instead of attached to a table and even lets Allfather know that there’s a gun in his coat pocket that Starr put there.

Jesse staggers from the table after being let out of the restraints and sneakily places the electrocuting dot on the back of Allfather. Fighting ensues and he stuns Allfather by pressing the button that will shock him. Then Jesse stabs Allfather with a serum that’s not the right blend of good/bad before taking the dot off the ground and applying back to his own neck. Then he presses the button and sends Genesis into Allfather who after a few seconds explodes.

Starr shows up next and he and Jesse get into the most disgusting fight ever as they wrestle through Allfather’s entrails to get the vial of Jesse’s soul that will give him full control of Genesis. Jesse wins, gets his soul back, and controls everything again.

He decides that killing Humperdoo is the best way to stop The Grail’s plans to end the world, but when he gets in the room with Humperdoo, he can’t pull the trigger.

Instead, he dresses Humperdoo and all his clones in the same outfit and sends them out into the world so no one will be able to tell which one is the real Humperdoo.

Before he leaves, he commands Starr to never wear a hat again. (His head looks like a penis. The episode title is German for dickhead, by the way.)

Jesse then hitches a ride in a fire truck back to Angelville where he’s ready to take on Gran’ma and end her reign of terror.

What’s this mean for the finale?!

I mentioned earlier that we see character growth this episode, but I’m not sure its growth or if its the “good” side of these characters. Tulip and Jesse show mercy when they don’t have to, and when it could come back to bite them later.

I sincerely believe that Tulip also possesses the same good/bad combination that would allow her to weild Genesis, too. I’d love to see that one day.

Going into the season finale, we can expect a final showdown with Gran’ma as Jesse reaches his childhood home with Genesis at his disposal. Tulip is (hopefully) going to take care of some Nazis, and Cass may or may not get through to Eccarius’ followers before fire finds him.
