‘Better Call Saul’ Will Focus on Exploring Grief In Its Upcoming Season

July 27, 2018 By Katie Leave a Comment

The much anticipated fourth season of Better Call Saul will premiere August 6th on AMC! We sat with the cast at SDCC and here’s what you can expect this season!

Season three of Better Call Saul ended on a tragic note with Chuck’s death, and it appears that the ripples of his decision to take his own life will effect everyone moving forward.

For me, Jimmy’s written Chuck out of his life, and he’s not going to let his death weigh him down. That would be how I perceived it, but these guys [Peter Gould] don’t agree, but we got through a whole season with dichotomy and I feel that everything that Jimmy does in season four fits with my philosophy of how he perceives Chuck and leaving Chuck behind him.

It will be interesting to watch as the different characters process their grief over a man that was objectively awful, but still a mentor (and brother) to Jimmy, Kim, and Howard. This part can be found at 17:43 on the video.

On top of all that, we’re getting closer and closer to the Breaking Bad timeline of the show. Better Call Saul is about Jimmy’s evolution into Saul Goodman, and it’s a beautiful parallel with Breaking Bad and Walter’s transformation into Heisenberg.

So, will we see any other Breaking Bad characters make the crossover to Better Call Saul? The short answer yes. When? Who knows.

“I’m speaking as a fan. Look, here’s what I know. I know that Hank knows Saul because when they see each other in the hall in the first time, they give each other a shake because they know each other. So Hank knows Saul. I think because of what Jesse tells Walt, “You don’t need a criminal lawyer. You need a criminal lawyer.” Obviously Jesse saw Saul’s commercial on t.v. I don’t think that’s enough for Jesse to recommend Saul. I think he knew him.”

Then they go even further by connecting Nacho to almost family member Crazy Eight (Max) who Jesse worked for at the beginning of Breaking Bad. Both Nacho and Crazy Eight knew Saul, so it goes to reason that Jesse heard about Saul through his business dealing with Crazy Eight.

One of the most unique challenges of the series is how the actors are tasked to play younger versions of themselves in the same universe. How Jimmy reacts isn’t how Saul eventually will to a situation. The same goes for entrepreneur and scary af Gus Fring. You can skip to 11:37 on the press conference video for this answer!

Honestly, this was one of the most interesting talks about a series that I’ve ever witnessed with a cast and creators. The insight into the series and characters gave the scope of the show even more depth which I didn’t think was possible since it’s already so good. You can listen to the entire press conference below, and I highly recommend it.

Season four will kick off August 6th, and you can expect an emotional ride as Jimmy tries to navigate his grief all the while being dragged further into the criminal side of his job.

What are you looking forward to this season on Better Call Saul? Do you think we’ll be seeing Breaking Bad favorites Jesse or Hank any time soon?
