RECAP: ‘Preacher’ Season Three, Episode Four “The Tombs”

July 16, 2018 By Katie Leave a Comment

Violence is a way of life in Angelville, and Jesse’s trying to protect the people he cares about the only way he knows how…pushing them away. Here’s our recap of “The Tombs”!

Well, “The Tombs” certainly opens in an unexpected place!

HELL

A guard peeks into the Saint of Killers cell, and his re-enactment is going. The guard opens the door and says:

“It’s time.”

The Saint comes out and follows the guard down the hallway to an elevator. They get in, and presses -9. I really love the whole circle of Hell thing. At -9, it’s some bad shit. Fire, bones, the Devil himself.

He’s on the phone when the Saint gets there, but quickly gets off of it. Satan offers him something to eat or drink, and has his assistant take his duster.

They get down to business, and Satan wants to talk about the Saint’s break out. How if angels offered him a way out, he’d take it, too, but it’s not good for business.

“What’s a good deal for you? Isn’t a good deal for me.”

That’s when he tells the Saint that God is gone.

“As you can imagine, I have plans. Big plans.”

But he can’t have people in Hell breaking out and interrupting his plans and ruining his reputation.

“I’m going to need you to make amends.”

The Saint is whipped repeatedly by Satan’s assistant, but he never makes a sound.

—

At Madame Boyd’s, Tulip still has her gun pulled and wants to know how to break the spell. When Madame Boyd tells her that they’re not getting out, Tulip shoots a circle in the floor.

“You’re crazy!”

“Ain’t I, though?”

She jumps and both she and Madame Boyd fall through the floor.

BACK IN THE DAY

We get a look at young Jesse as he’s being the ringleader in The Tombs. We can see where he got his showmanship from.

The two guys fighting get injected with something before they fight, and the winner will eventually fight Jody. Jesse catches someone and asks him what he’s doing there and sends him away. Jody confronts him about it, too.

“How much more you want me to squeeze out of them.”

“Every last drop.”

Jesse tells Jody to go easy on them, and he says he’s easy every time.

In the back, T.C. is mixing whatever they shot into those other guys. Jesse tells him that Jody’s up, and T.C. brings out all the guys from The Tombs who would want a chance to fight Jody for a chance at getting their souls back.

T.C. makes some small talk as he unlatches a man, and asks what Jesse is doing that weekend. He says he may go see Gladiator again, and T.C. tells him to not let Madame L’Angelle find out who he’s really going to see.

Is this where the Boyds come in?! Was Jesse seeing one of them??

You can tell that Jesse is looking for a way out after this encounter with Jody and T.C.

—-

Back in the present, Jesse has his top hat on, and Cassidy and the science teacher are fighting in front of him.

Cassidy loses the love potion after taking a hit, and almost loses his leg when the science teacher cuts him. Cassidy slams something into his head and kills the science teacher. He immediately runs over and tries to check on the teacher, but it’s too late.

In order to keep Cass fighting, Jesse tells Jody and T.C. to go get him some blood and booze to heal him. When they’ve left, he turns Cassidy over and says:

“I told you you were gonna hate me.”

“You’re right.”

—

Tulip and Madame Boyd are in the car and they’ve eluded her people.

“I mean what I said. Even if I could, I’m not helping Jesse out of that spell.”

Tulip wants to know why she hates Jesse so much.

“Jesse L’Angelle is the worst person I’ve ever loved.”

We get a flashback with Jesse and a younger Madame L’Angelle as they listen to her brother talk. She interrupts him and sends him out looking for customers so she can Jesse can mess around. When he leaves, they start kissing, but Jesse not too into it.

“You’re not still mooning over that what’s her name girl in Texas, are you?”

“Tulip? No.”

“Better not be.”

She goes to the bathroom and starts talking about business picking up, and Jesse keeps thinking about what T.C. said about Miss Marie finding out about who he was with. When she comes back out of the bathroom, he tells her that he’s the heir to Angelville and he’s not screwing that up for a few sloppy kisses with a piece of trash like her.

I know it was Jesse’s way of protecting her, but DAMN.

—-

Tulip isn’t impressed about that story being the reason why she hates Jesse so much, especially considering the history between him and Tulip.

—-

In the car, Jody and Jesse are talking, and Jesse’s really playing up the assholeness. Saying that Cassidy isn’t his friend and he’s only good because he can be beaten repeatedly and put back together again with some blood.

Jody goes to get the kegs for The Tombs, and Jesse goes to get frozen yogurt at the shipping store. That’s when we find out that Cassidy has been chopped up into several pieces and Jesse is shipping him away.

They get into an argument, but Cassidy can’t get away, so it doesn’t matter.

“You’re welcome, asshole.”

—-

Back with Tulip and Sabine, she tells Tulip that Jesse broke her heart twice.

That’s when we go back in time again, and we’re shown that Sabine’s brother went to The Tombs to fight for his sister’s honor, and JESSE KILLED HER BROTHER.

—

Tulip slams the brakes and tells Sabine she’s lying.

“This place brings out the worst in him.”

Tulips makes her get out of the car and leaves her on the side of the road.

—-

At the shipping store, Cassidy’s box is leaking blood, and the guy running the store looks at the box. It’s open and a trail leading to the door. Cassidy’s going back to Angelville to fight! Or at least for that vile of love portion.

—-

In The Tombs, Jesse puts on his hat, and starts the show.

He makes three announcements:

The alarm on a Camry is going off.
God is missing from Heaven, and he’s testing us.
You better find a better way to gamble with your souls. The Tombs are closed.

That plan is shot to hell because Cassidy makes his grand appearance, and Jesse calls dibs on fighting him first.

—

In the car, Tulip’s having a really hard time dealing with what she learned about Jesse. She doesn’t even notice it when God passes her.

—

Cassidy and Jesse are fighting hard, and Jesse tells him to stay down, but Cassidy is after that love potion and just won’t do it. Jesse ends up hitting him with a bad and the woods shatters into a perfect stake.

“Stay down, Cass. I mean it.”

Jesse sees Tulip through the crowd, and as she pushes her way through, Jesse stabs Cassidy in the back with the stake. To prove his point further, Jesse yells to the crowd, but especially to Tulip:

“Who needs God? The Tombs are back in business! Now you’ve seen it. It’s gonna happen here night after night. I’m a L’Angelle, and if you don’t like it, you can go. Both of you. Get it? Got it? Good.”

It’s the same thing he said to Sabine when he treated her so poorly and walked away.

Jesse is protecting the people he cares about by pushing them as far away as he can.

—

Later, Cassidy meets Tulip in the car, and they leave Angelville.

“It’s not all his fault, you know. He’s just a product of his environment.”

Cassidy keeps talking and says they can go wherever they want. Tulip stops in front of a bus, the same one Jesse’s mom used, and he gets it.

“You can’t stay here, Cass. It’s not safe.”

He says that he’s not leaving without her, and she tells him that he has to.

“I love you.”

“But I don’t love you.”

“Right.”

He takes the potion out of his pocket, and tells Tulip

“We should have gone to Bimini.”

He’s way too good for everyone in this show because he had the potion and HE DIDN’T USE IT! I will stan Cassidy FOREVER.

On the bus with him, though, is Lara Featherstone.

—

In Angelville, Tulip confronts Jesse.

“You’re a mean son-of-a-bitch, but you’re not that mean.”

She calls him out on his behavior and how he’s trying to protect them by being a dick, and Jesse finally crumbles.

“I don’t need protecting. I need a goddamn boyfriend who levels with me.”

Jesse Custer needs Tulip to keep his shit straight. Then Tulip asks about Kenny, Sabine’s brother.

In Jesse version, he begs Kenny to stop, but has to kill him anyway because he won’t. Jody is the one who brags about his victory.

“Man, this place sucks.”

“Just you wait.”

Jesse asks if they’re good again, and then they kiss.

—

The next morning, Tulip wakes up and realizes that she left Sabine in the trunk of the damn car.

“Sorry about that. Got busy.”

Sabine tells her that Tulip that she can break the curse.

“Oh yeah, with my wand from graduating Hogwarts. Totally forgot about that.”

“If you want to get rid of a spell like this, all you gotta do is get rid of the person who cast it.”

Sabine tells her that nothing will happen to Jesse. Once the person who cast the spell is dead, the spell will be broken. Tulip still thinks something will happen, and she may be right. I think Sabine may think if she kills Jesse grandma, something might happen to Tulip, but I don’t know if she’d be that petty.

We’ll have to see because now that the seed is fully planted, Tulip will try and kill Gran’ma.

—

BACK IN HELL

The Saint is still being whipped, and when he gets the punishment out of the way, Satan is really impressed by his ability to not scream.

Satan tells the Saint that he needs him to go back up and bring two people back.

“I’m a weapon?”

“No. I need them back alive. If you can do that, you can have your guns back.”

When he turns around, his back is beaten until it’s just bone.

I’m betting those two people are Eugene and Hitler.

—-

With Cassidy sent away and Jesse and Tulip fending for themselves in Angelville, what do you think will happen next?

Next week’s episode is called, “The Coffin” so will Gran’ma make good on her promise from a couple of episodes ago with Jesse or even Tulip getting placed inside a coffin and put into the swamp or will we be getting a flashback to Jesse’s childhood?

In a ten episode season, that episode will mark the halfway point, so could it be a midseason finale of sorts? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!
