REVIEW: ‘The Originals’ Season 5, Episode 6 “What, Will, I, Have, Left”

June 2, 2018 By Funmbi Leave a Comment

Klaus and Caroline join forces to find Hope and Hayley. Unfortunately, Greta is one step ahead. Again. We review The Originals, “What, Will, I, Have, Left”.

You know, I wonder if Elijah, Marcel, or Vincent ever considered that, if Marcel compelled Elijah to forget “Always and Forever”, someone would show up and manipulate Elijah into hurting himself and/or the other Mikaelsons. Unfortunately (SO unfortunately), this is exactly where we find ourselves in “What, Will, I, Have, Left”, and in all honesty, I have no idea how the Mikaelsons will be able to survive this. I truly don’t.

“What, Will, I, Have, Left” begins with Hope and Roman on their road trip, supposedly to find a witch who can bind Hope’s werewolf side (as demanded by Greta for Hayley’s return). During the trip, Hope opens up and shares her concern for her family.

Hope has such a wonderful spirit. She loves her parents and I despise that Roman is taking advantage of this. Eventually, Roman takes Hope to a house called Shiloh Place… where a kidnapped Hayley is there waiting. Yep, it all comes together for Hope, as Romance chains her hands to prevent her from wielding magic. She realizes that he’s been manipulating her and harming her family. Roman is surprisingly naive, optimistically espousing the idea that his mother only wants to preserve the purity of vampires AND wolves by eliminating the contamination that hybrids introduce. Once their werewolf sides are bound, Roman has total faith that his mother will let Hope and Hayley go. Yeah. Sure. Whatever.

With that said, there are moments where they hint at Roman’s potential for redemption. When having conversations with his mother, Roman starts to seem hesitant with Greta’s plan. In any event, Roman must know he should be nervous because someone is tracking Hope’s movements, and that someone is Klaus, with Caroline!

That’s right, friends, we get our second Klaroline reunion of the season, when the two join forces to find Hope after she’s absconded from school in Mystic Falls. During their trip to find Hope, Klaus, again, reveals his frustrations, pain, and constant worry he feels being apart from his daughter. Of course, Caroline’s all, “welcome to being a parent, Klaus.” She encourages him to reflect on how he can build a bridge with Hope once they find her (which doesn’t include killing Roman… maybe).

Klaus and Caroline also reflect on the their origins and my heart is so happpppppyyyyyyyyy! Her attraction to bad boys… His insistence that at least one of those bad boys had good intentions. *EEEEEP*

“Do you regret the time we’ve spent together?”
“No, I don’t regret our time together…”

“If we’d never met until now, I wonder if you’d even notice me.”
“It would be impossible not to notice you, Caroline. Your essence would hover around me, harangue me until I did.”

Elsewhere, Greta makes her way to France in search of Antoinette… and Elijah. I still don’t know if Antoinette is on our side, but she *is* estranged from her old family and finds the vampire-Nazi “philosophy” to be abhorrent. Yet, it becomes clear that Greta is in France for Elijah. She tells some ridiculous story about Roman getting caught up in Hope Mikaelson’s web, landing Roman in Klaus’s crosshairs. Greta begs Elijah, saying that the only person who can stop Klaus is him. Greta essentially sends Elijah to face off against Klaus to supposedly save Roman. Ugh… can Elijah open his eyes and see when he’s being manipulated?! Also, I need Antoinette to be a better judge of character about her mom and protect Elijah from this foolishness. In the end, this is apparently too much to hope for.

We spend a little bit of time with Vincent and Freya in NOLA. Irish Declan (still fine AF) is increasingly frustrated about Hayley going missing and the police not doing much about it. Freya suggests telling Declan about supernatural creatures, but Vincent is extremely resistant. It seems that Vincent still feels guilt for Camille O’Connell’’s death, and wants to preserve Declan’s obliviousness. After speaking with Ivy, Vincent decides to tell Declan the truth… until he finds out that Declan is Cami’s cousin. Whattttttttttttt?!

Back with Hayley and Hope, we observe some mother/daughter bonding time as they struggle for their freedom. Hayley establishes how high the stakes really are because Greta will never let Hope go.

“You are the one that could finally unite all the factions… and you, my sweet girl, are their worst fear.”

I didn’t even put this together about Hope, but it’s very fascinating!

Hope devises a plan to alert Freya (and Klaus) to their location, but it involves the binding spell being performed on Hayley. It is painful to watch, but successful. Once the spell is completel, Hope and Hayley make their move, knocking out Roman and the witch, then heading for the door. However, Hayley is now only vampire, one without a daylight ring. She’s trapped and knew she would be. Hayley begs Hope to run, but then Greta arrives and knocks Hope out.

This is where Roman realizes that his mom never intended to let Hayley or Hope live. Hayley launches herself at Greta, desperate to save her daughter. While this unfolds inside, Klaus, Caroline, AND Elijah also arrive at the house, and all hell breaks loose here, too. Elijah is determined to protect his family, and for the first time in over a thousand years, he’s not referring to the Mikaelsons.

SO much happens in the last few minutes of the episode! It’s overwhelming to watch, but I have nothing but kudos for Marguerite MacIntyre (writer of the episode) and our boo-thang Charles Michael Davis who directed!

Klaus vs. Elijah, Hayley vs. Greta, the Hollow thing happening, as nature falls apart because more Mikaelsons are together…

Then Elijah stabs Klaus in the back, walks inside the house, takes one look at Greta pinning Hayley to the wall, and goes for Roman. ROMAN. His supposed family. I’m sick with thinking of what must have passed through Hayley’s mind. Klaus is incapacitated, Elijah is no help at all, Hope is knocked out, surrounded by enemies, and Greta has her hand wrapped around Hayley’s heart, ready to rip it out.

Hayley makes the calculation that she can take out Greta to save her daughter, her Hope… but she must die, herself. Hayley steels herself and with her last ounce of strength, she breaks off Greta’s finger with her daylight ring and launches them both out the door and into the sun. We (and Klaus and Elijah) watch as Hayley and Greta burn.

I. AM. DEVASTATED. How is Klaus going to explain this to Hope? Darling Hope…

More than that, I don’t know that I can forgive Elijah for this. Hell, Elijah may never forgive himself. And I say this as someone for who Elijah has been my favorite character from the beginning. I’ve loved HAYLIJAH since the pilot episode and to see that relationship implode in such a callous way completely shatters my heart. Hayley deserves better. Elijah deserves better. WE deserve better.

As I said at the beginning, I have no idea how the Mikaelsons will survive this. Someone needs to do something to defeat this Hollow once and for all, so we can wake Elijah the hell up.
