FIRST LOOK: ‘Crazy Rich Asians’, Coming this August

May 2, 2018 By Funmbi Leave a Comment

Crazy Rich Asians is the romantic comedy you won’t want to miss this summer! Watch the first trailer and get ready to laugh and fall in love.

Now that it’s May, I don’t think it’s too early to get excited about the 2018 summer films coming our way!

I first heard about Crazy Rich Asians in early 2017 from friends of a friend who were raving about the best-selling book by Kevin Kwan, and how production was about to get underway Singapore and Malaysia. Ever since, Crazy Rich Asians has been on my radar. You know that romantic comedy is my jam; plus getting the chance to see *contemporary* Pan-Asian peoples and cultures represented on the big screen is a massive treat.

Let me tell you, the first trailer has me even more excited! Constance Wu (“Fresh Off the Boat”) leads an international cast of stars, including: Gemma Chan (“Humans”), Lisa Lu (“2012”), and Awkwafina (upcoming “Ocean’s 8,” “Neighbors 2”), Henry Golding (making his feature film debut), Sonoya Mizuno (“La La Land”), Chris Pang (“Marco Polo”), Jimmy O. Yang (“Silicon Valley”), comedian Ronny Chieng (“The Daily Show”), Remi Hii (“Marco Polo”), and Nico Santos (“Superstore”), with Ken Jeong (the “Hangover” films”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Star Trek: Discovery,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”).

The story follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life… like he is the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families AND one of Singapore’s most sought-after bachelors. YIKES! Being on Nick’s arm puts a target on Rachel’s back, with jealous socialites and, even worse, Nick’s own disapproving mother (Michelle Yeoh) taking aim. And it soon becomes clear that while money can’t buy love, it can definitely complicate things…

In the trailer, the romance and hilarity come shining through. Constance Wu is a perfect leading lady an Henry Golding is FINE AF and super swoony. It’ll be interesting to see Rachel and Nick navigate their relationship, especially in the context of his family’s ultra-super-rich lifestyle. And goodness gracious, the sumptuousness of all that wealth shimmers and sparkles on-screen! (I’m looking at you, production designer Nelson Coates!)

Crazy Rich Asians hits theaters on Friday, August 17!

Make sure you’re following the film on social media to stay up-to-date with the latest teasers.
