Moonlight Sins by Jennifer L. Armentrout
RATING: 3.5 out of 5 STARS
{Spoilers; Adult Content}

Moonlight Sins is the first novel in the de Vincent series by Jennifer L. Armentrout! It’s sexy, swoony, and mixed with some gothic horror elements that made us keep turning the page.

We meet Lucian on the night his father supposedly commits suicide. None of the three brothers, Dev, Gabe, or Lucian seem too concerned about this and try and cover it up. Since the cops do show up and foul play is suspected, they can’t keep it out of the news for long. The brothers, especially Dev, will seem to stop at nothing to protect the family name.

Meanwhile, Julia is leaving behind her home state so she can start a new life away from her creeper ex-husband. Her home health job will have her caring for a young woman who seems catatonic. Before she leaves for Louisiana, though, she spends a final night out with the girls and meets a handsome man named Taylor who makes her see stars.

She sees red the next day, though, once she reaches her new job and finds out Taylor is actually Lucian de Vincent, one of her employers.

She’s to take care of his sister, but the mysterious circumstances that surround her reappearance don’t make sense, nor does the way the house creaks and footsteps sound in rooms that are empty, or the way the vines that tangle around the house seem to move on Julia’s hands.

I’ll admit, the concept of this novel had me hooked. It’s a good mystery with some southern gothic feels. Where this one lost me was the lack of resolution. By the end of the novel, we still have way more questions than answers about the de Vincent curse, the home, Dev and Gabe, and the ghostly rumors.

It felt like the author had so much she wanted to weave together that some strands were started but couldn’t be finished. There’s always the opportunity that they’ll be pulled together in the coming novels, but I like my books to feel more wrapped up that what happened in Moonlight Sins.

There was also some very oddly timed sexual tension between Julia, Gabe, and Lucian, and I was a little confused by where the author was going with that.

Overall, the mystery is there and the concept is strong. I’m looking forward to the next novel and seeing what the author will do as she continues this family’s saga.

Official Synopsis

Julia Hughes has always played it safe until she learned a very painful lesson. Now Julia’s starting over with a job in the Louisiana bayou—and a scorching encounter with a stranger, only to discover he’s Lucian de Vincent… her new employer. The de Vincent brothers share a massive fortune and a dark reputation. Julia cares for their troubled sister, but a menacing presence in the mansion—and the ever-present temptation of Lucian—prove dangerously distracting.

Lucian’s grandmother claimed de Vincent men fall in love once—and hard. Apparently, it’s Lucian’s turn. Julia’s compassionate care of his twin makes Lucian want to lay himself bare. But some secrets are better for Julia not to know.

The recent “suicide” of Lucian’s father is the latest in a string of deaths on the estate. Someone is eliminating the de Vincents. And the best way to get to Lucian may be through Julia…
