Freeform and Refinery29 hosted the premiere for grown-ish, starring Yara Shahidi! We’ve got the details, including 20+ images from the event!
Last night (Wednesday, December 13, 2017) Freeform and Refinery29 hosted the the world premiere screening of the highly-anticipated new comedy, grown-ish. The half-hour, black-ish spinoff stars Yara Shahidi (as Zoey Johnson).
Yara attended the premiere at Lure Nightclub in Hollywood, along with other cast members Francia Raisa, Trevor Jackson, Jordan Buhat, Emily Arlook, Chris Parnell, Chloe Bailey, and Halle Bailey.
Executive Producers Kenya Barris, E. Brian Dobbins, and Julie Bean were also in attendance with Tom Ascheim (President, Freeform) and Karey Burke (Executive Vice President, Programming & Development, Freeform).
After screening the first two episodes of grown-ish, cast and creators participated in a Q&A. Chloe x Halle did a surprise performance of the series theme song “Grown” as well as their upcoming song “The Kids are Alright.”
grown-ish follows Zoey, the Johnsons’ popular, entitled, stylish and socially active 17-year-old daughter, as she begins her freshman year of college at Southern California University. The series will tackle current social issues and complexities facing both students and administrators.
In an interview with Variety, Kenya Barris talked about the inspiration for the show:
“I saw a meme one day and it said, ‘Where would Zoey go to college?’ I was like, ‘This is a f—ing show.’ That was my lightbulb moment.”
I don’t know about you, but this show is giving me *serious* A Different World feels and I love it! Zoey has always been one of my favorite characters on black-ish and I think Yara is a brilliant young actor. grown-ish is definitely going to be a fun one!
