PREVIEW: ‘Outlander’ Season 3, Episode 8 “First Wife”

November 3, 2017 By Funmbi Leave a Comment

Claire’s return to Lallybroch is met with cold shoulders. Plus, Jamie still has his big secret… Watch a sneak peek of this week’s Outlander, “First Wife”!

If you’ve watched my video review of “Crème de Menthe” (with Katie), you know that I wasn’t very pleased with the episode. Certainly, there were moments I loved: Fergus and Young Ian’s bonding, Yi Tien Cho affirming Claire’s attempts to preserve life with no judgement, and Jamie’s very sweet emphasis that he was so desperate for Claire, that he’d pay any price. At the same time, I was frustrated with Claire’s inability (or unwillingness) to let go of her modern sensibilities, do the detriment of Jamie and his crew. I was also increasingly angry with Jamie’s resentment of Claire and his dismissal of Ian/Jenny’s right to know where their son’s whereabouts. By the time “Crème de Menthe” ended, and we realized Jamie’s secret, I was incredibly nervous about the impending trip to Lallybroch. (Check out my full episode recap HERE.)

For more, make sure you’ve watched Inside the World of Outlander where Executive Producers Ronald D. Moore, Toni Graphia, and Matthew B. Roberts tell us about filming “Crème de Menthe”. We get a behind-the-scenes look at filming Claire’s surgery on John Barton (including taking molds of the actor and Caitriona Balfe being trained to use the instruments to perform the surgery). We also learn more about the process of filming A. Malcolm’s print shop burning down (which took three nights to film BEFORE additional special effects):

In Sunday’s episode “First Wife” (written by Joy Blake, directed by Jennifer Getzinger), Claire finally returns to Lallybroch and unfortunately it isn’t the homecoming she’s expecting:

Claire returns to Lallybroch with Jamie, where she does not receive quite the reception she was expecting. Unbeknownst to her, Jamie’s made some choices in their time apart which come back to haunt them with a vengeance. (via STARZ)

“…haunt them with a vengeance”??? Jamie’s choice for his other must be just that terrible. And I’m even more nervous than I was before. Also, what’s Jamie about to say for himself regarding all the lies he’s told Ian and Jenny about their son?! Ugh…

Take a look at these two clips from “First Wife”–

In the first clip (via Decider.com exclusive), Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian have just arrived at Lallybroch and they are all in big trouble with Jenny and Ian:

It is tense in the Murray home… really tense. But John Bell is the cutest Wee Ian!

In this second sneak peek (via MarieClaire.com exclusive), Claire is trying to catch up with Jenny and bond over her grandchildren (Wee Jamie and the other kiddos are all grown up), but Jenny isn’t having it:

Jenny Fraser-Murray is FOREVER the queen of shade! And, for me, unlike in the book, I kind of sympathize with her. I wonder how much more of this Claire and Jamie will be able to take? I guess they could just tell Jenny the truth about her being a time-traveller…

Check out five images from “First Wife” and then make sure to live tweet with me at 8p/7c this Sunday, November 5 on STARZ!
