Catch up on this week’s latest Outlander news, including new images from Season 3 and new details about Season 4 filming!
Sassenachs, the countdown to Outlander Season 3 continues, and we’re getting so close, with just about two weeks until the premiere! BTW, is anyone planning to attend fan events in LA or NYC???
The great thing is that, as Droughtlander comes to an end, more goodies are becoming available. And actually, Entertainment Weekly declared the official end to Droughtlander just yesterday by releasing their new, swooooooony cover shoot with Sam Heugh and Cait Balfe. Go HERE to see the images, as well as a BTS interview with Sam and Cait.
This week, we got some other goodies, including new Season 3 images and interviews with cast members and creators.
Earlier this week, STARZ shared a new Season 3 trailer. In “The Reunion of the Centuries,” as Jamie talks to Lord John Grey about Claire and Claire seems to share some memories with Frank (?), we get images of the Jamie/Claire romance from across the series.
Yep, this separation is going to hurt so, so much.
Also this week, Entertainment Tonight’s released new interviews where Leanne Aguilera sat down with Outlander‘s head production designer Jon Gary Steele and then a joint interview with Steven Cree (Ian Murray) and John Bell (Wee Ian).
Leanne’s interview with Jon actually takes place on the Lallybroch set. He walks us through the process of creating the different sets, which usually takes about four months to construct after designing. Jon talks about the Boston set and looking to highlight Claire’s new life and also discusses how much thought went into producing Jamie’s cave, despite it being such a small space. And Jon’s fave set this season??? PRINT SHOP!

Leanne also chats with our fave father/son duo. John talks about being excited to join the Outlander world. We get a quick glimpse into some Murray family drama (there are a lot of kiddos!), with Ian about to punish Wee Ian… probably for some crazy antic with his Uncle Jamie 😉 John reveals that, over the course of the season, we see Wee Ian develop from a child into a man who stands on his own two feet. And Steven also reflects on Ian’s relationship with Jamie and the potential for conflict given their different approaches to life. It’s quite sweet and funny!

As if EW didn’t already blow our Sassenach feels wide open with their Sam/Cait cover shoot, they also debuted (via exclusive) FOUR new images from Season 3. We see (pregnant) Claire and Frank in Boston trying to work through a difficult relationship; Jamie on his way to Ardsmuir Prison (I think). Then 20 years later, we see Jamie and older Fergus Fraser in Edinborough, and Claire taking on her role as doctor during the cross-Atlantic trip.
Entertainment Weekly also has a series of new Outlander articles that you must check out. However, I want to highlight two.
EW talked with Matthew B. Roberts, who wrote the episode with Jamie and Claire’s reunion. While there’s some concern that the print shop scene has been altered for TV, Roberts reassures fans:
“It’s not just Claire’s story. It’s Jamie and Claire’s story. So, we wanted to show both perspectives. In the book, you get it from Claire’s view. She comes in the print shop. It’s really kind of told from her POV. I wanted to give Jamie’s POV of the same moment. I wanted to also give the fans the moment twice. They’ve been waiting for it for a long time! So, rather give it to them one time, you give ‘em something they don’t exactly expect.”
Ummmm, what’s this about getting print shop TWICE?! I think we’re all here for that!
In another EW piece, Ron Moore and Maril Davis discuss how plans for Season 4 (based on Drums of Autumn) are already underway! The 13-episode season will debut sometime in 2018, likely the Fall (*EEP*):
“We’re deep into writing it,” Moore tells EW. “There are crews on the ground in Scotland, and have been there for quite some time prepping, so we’re moving forward.”
Moore says the plan is to have locations in Scotland double as 18th century America, but “we’ll also go to Eastern Europe and shoot some stuff for the mountains and rivers of North Carolina.”
Casting is also underway, with key new characters like Auntie Jocasta and Captain Stephen Bonnet (*RAGE*).
In the past, I’ve mentioned being concerned about the portrayal of people of color, particularly that of African Americans and Native Americans in the 18th Century AND 20th Century. I wasn’t too satisfied with the book, so I’m hoping the TV adaptation takes more care.
