This summer, the movie adaptation of Jeannette Walls’ 2005 best-selling memoir, The Glass Castle, will hit the big screen.

Brie Larson takes on the leas role, as we explore Walls’ journey from childhood poverty to accomplishing success as a New York-based journalist. In the process, we meet Walls’ dysfunctional family, who were constantly on the move thanks to her father Rex’s (Woody Harrelson) drinking problems. Yet, Jeannette is influenced by her father’s joyfully wild nature and uses her experiences to fuel her determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms.

Larson and Harrelson are also joined by Naomi Watts (playing Jeannette’s mother Rose Mary), Max Greenfield, Sarah Snook, and Robin Bartlett.

Thanks to Lionsgate, we have the first trailer to share. We watch Jeannette try to reconcile her ordered, adult life with the chaotic adventure that was her childhood:

According to Walls, in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE:

“They did a spectacular job bringing to life a complicated story, there’s so many nuances…I wanted Brie Larson to play this role even before I knew who she was. She understands how to be strong and vulnerable at the same time, how you can fight and be scared at the same time.”

Take a look at six images from The Glass Castle (courtesy of Lionsgate).

The Glass Castle hits theaters on August 11. Get your tickets HERE.

A young girl comes of age in a dysfunctional family of nonconformist nomads with a mother who’s an eccentric artist and an alcoholic father who would stir the children’s imagination with hope as a distraction to their poverty. (via IMDB)

After enduring an impoverished, itinerant childhood that saw them scampering around the western part of the U.S., Walls and her three siblings escape one by one to New York and stake out a stable life. That’s all threatened when their parents follow them there, and the children have to come to grips with who their parents really are, and whether they want them in their lives. (via PEOPLE)
