#BlackGirlMagic & MORE Black Titles Hitting Netflix in April

Chewing Gum (Season 2), The Get Down, and Dear White People are just a few of the Black titles hitting Netflix this April. Let’s discuss all the #BlackGirlMagic and Black Excellence that will be available to stream on a screen near you.

This April Netflix is adding 11 Black projects to its streaming service and our spirits couldn’t be happier. Michaela Coel’s hit show Chewing Gum returns for a second season ??, we get to be transported back to the South Bronx in the late ’70s with The Get Down, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o delights us in Queen of Katwe, and host of more. So let’s look at the goodness and the dates you can get your binge-watch on!

April 1

Boy Bye (2016) – Chris Stokes and Marques Houston team up again to bring us a romantic comedy starring Wendy Raquel Robinson, Ross Fleming, Shondrella Avery, Tammy Townsend, and Valarie Pettiford. Boy Bye is set amongst beautiful landscapes and tells the story of love, romance, and betrayal.

Cool Runnings (1993) – Disney’s hit comedy directed by Jon Turteltaub, and starring Leon, Doug E. Doug, Rawle D. Lewis, Malik Yoba and the late John Candy will become available for your viewing pleaseure and may have you dreaming of becoming bobsledders!

Richard Pryor: Live & Smokin’ (1971) – Experience Richard Pryor in one of his early live performances at the Improvisation in New York.

April 4

Chewing Gum (Season 2; 2017) – Michaela Coel’s hit comedy TV series transports us 3 months into the future after the close of the opening season, and we find out what’s new with after Tracey (Michaela Coel) and Connor (Robert Lonsdale) as they’ve return to the council-estate. Will Joy (Shola Adewusi) and Cynthia (Susan Wokoma) welcome Tracey home or will Candice (Danielle Walters) and Esther/Nan (Maggie Steed) be there to take her in. Tune in to see!

April 7

The Get Down (Season 2; 2017) – Baz Luhrmann TV series starring Shameik Moore (Shaolin Fantastic), Justice Smith (Ezekiel “Books” Figuero), Herizen Guardiola (Mylene Cruz), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Cadillac), Jaden Smith (Dizzee Kipling), Skylan Brooks (Ra-Ra Kipling), Tremaine Brown Jr. (Boo Boo Kiping), Mamoudou Athie (Grandmaster Flash), Jimmy Smits (Francisco “Papa Fuerte” Cruz), and Giancarlo Esposito (Ramon Cruz) returns to give us a glimpse in rise of hip-hop in the South Bronx, set in the late ’70s!

April 11

Kevin Hart: What Now? (2016) – Kevin Hart’s blockbuster comedic stand-up show will give bring laughter to your days once it lands on 4/11.

April 14

Sandy Wexler (2017) – Adam Sandler (Sandy Wexler) brings us another comedy! This title being listed as a Black film will have a few saying, “Huh?!”, but the Black star power within the film includes Academy Award and Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson as Courtney Clarke, Carl Weathers, Terry Crews, Chris Rock, and more. Catch it mid-April and you decide where the film should be placed.

April 25

Queen of Katwe (2016) – Disney’s film about a young Ugandan chess genius, that stars Madina Nalwanga, David Oyelowo, Lupita Nyong’o and was directed by Mira Nair will have you feeling all of the feels. This is a must watch!

April 28

A Murder in the Park (2014) – Sit down for this documentary where we will once again have the world questioning our justice system.

Dear White People (2017) – Justin Simien’s acclaimed 2014 film with the same title gets adapted into a series starring Logan Browning (Samantha White) and Marque Richardson (Reggie Green), and takes us back to Winchester University and picks up where the film left off. From the release of the series trailer controversy sparked about the show being anti-white. The satirical series holds up a mirror to all the issues our society is currently facing and that hits too close to home for many, and because of this we should all make sure to catch every second of it – we’ll all learn something and laugh while doing so.

 

Rodney King (2017) – Spike Lee (Director) and Roger Guenveur Smith “retrace the charged sequence of events between the police beating of Rodney King and the deadly LA riots” in a documentary.
