Lionsgate just debuted the first official trailer from Saban’s Power Rangers! Watch now and meet the five soon-to-be Rangers, plus check out new images from the film.
I said this would be a good weekend to be Power Rangers fans, and this morning things just got even better!
Ahead of today’s New York Comic-Con panel ( 2:00pm ET, Theater at Madison Square Garden; watch a live stream HERE), Lionsgate has released the first Saban’s Power Rangers trailer.
In the teaser, we get to see how the five teens meet… and it definitely gives me Breakfast Club feels. The trailer opens with Jason (Dacre Montgomery) being driven to his high school for Saturday detention. Interestingly, Kimberly (Naomi Scott), Trini (Becky G), Billy (RJ Cyler), and Zack (Ludi Lin) are there too.
Over time, the group gets to known one another, so much so that they skip detention for a little adventure. One that brings them in contact with the Power Ranger coins. (Our fansite exclusive from yesterday is actually from this moment!)
Each person takes a coin, which gives them superhuman type strength (my fave part is when the guy who’s been bullying Billy realizes Billy isn’t to be messed with anymore!).
In the process of trying to understand the technology, the group comes into contact with Zordon and Alpha 5, though we don’t see Bryan Cranston or Bill Hader in their respective roles. However, we do get to see the big villain, Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa!

So much about this trailer hearkens back to the original series (like the familiar jingle), but it’s also clear that this is a modern, darker, maybe even dystopian reboot. And I couldn’t be more excited!

Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
