You guys, I am SO excited for this movie I’m about to tell you about.

As a history buff, I’m always eager to learn new aspects of familiar stories.

The story of the Space Race between the U.S. and USSR during the second half of the 20th Century is such a well-known part of America’s national history. In school, we learned all about John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, and the Apollo 11 mission that put Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon.

We’ve seen the documentaries, films, and various celebrations.

But we know much less about all the behind-the-scenes work of all the scientists needed to propel America in the Space Race, particularly the stories of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, the brilliant African-American scientists working at NASA during this time.

The upcoming book, Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly (out September 6, 2016, pre-order HERE) tells the “true story of NASA’s African-American female mathematicians who played a crucial role in America’s space program—and whose contributions have been unheralded, until now.”

Back in 2015, 20th Century Fox acquired the rights to Hidden Figures, which has now been adapted into a film of the same name, starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe as the “human computers” who wrote the equations and calculated the flight paths behind NASA’s historic space achievements.

Yesterday during the Olympics telecast, the first trailer for Hidden Figures debuted.

Watch below, where we see Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe) as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. At the same time, we see the very egregious discrimination these Black women endure in their personal and professional lives:

“It’s not because we wear skirts… it’s because we wear glasses.”

*FLAILS* Nerdy girls unite!

Also, the music by Pharrell is giving me so much life!

What do you think of the trailer?

Hidden Figures is out in theaters next year on January 13, 2017.

Take a look at the newly released film poster below. Here’s hoping for even more clips from Hidden Figures and some behind-the-scenes interviews too!
