Remember how Jennifer Finnigan warned us last week that Tyrant‘s Season 3 was going to be a massive sh*t-storm? Well, she wasn’t kidding.

In “Cockroach” we realized what I think many of us have subconsciously known—Bassam’s plans to transition Abuddin to democracy will be met with some big internal and external threats.

We finally learned that General Cogswell had come to Abuddin to offer military aid, training, and troops… in exchange, the U.S. expected a silent, but robust alliance to pursue their interests in the Middle East.

Bassam was already having difficulty maintaining the values of the Truth and Dignity Commission. Now that Fauzi returned to Abuddin, could Bassam tell his friend that Fauzi’s daughter Samira died by his hands? With Daliyah’s encouragement, Bassam told the truth and as expected, Fauzi was upset and devastated.

Ihab Rashid had reunited with his Caliphate buddies and was keen for the opportunity to make Bassam/Khalil pay for Samira’s death. Ahead of Molly’s visit yo Ma’an, the Caliphate was able threaten her driver into telling them Molly’s movements.

Things went wrong very quickly. The motorcade was ambushed and Rami died defending Molly and Emma. When the two of them ran away, Molly tripped and was knocked out… in order to save her mom, Emma hid Molly and the Caliphate soldiers took her instead.

Of course, Ihab Rashid truly believed in “eye for an eye.” He intended to have Bassam lose his wife and proposed to trade Emma for Molly. Bassam vehemently refused, even though Molly would willingly give her life for her daughter.

By the end of the episode while Bassam was brainstorming about next steps with Daliyah, Molly escaped the palace to find Sheik Al-Qadi (the spiritual and political leader of Ma’an) and his wife, Nafisa. The Sheik supposedly had ties to Ihab, and Molly intended to contact him and make the trade.

*CRIES* But I wonder… would Fauzi be able to appeal to Ihab to let his vengeance go? After all, Samira was his daughter longer than she was Ihab’s wife.

In other developments:

  • Sammy was starting a potentially dangerous relationship with his college professor, Dr. El-Amin.
  • At Leila’s insistence, Ahmed was forced to bury Nusrat in an unmarked grave during a private ceremony… only Ahmed, Sammy, and Emma attended. #PoorNusrat
  • Jamal was alive and awake, now convalescing in a private hospital.
  • Fauzi mourned his daughter’s death and probably even hated Bassam, but that didn’t stop him from considering a run for president.
  • Cogswell and Leila commiserated about their failed marriages over wine and barbecue and then began a romantic relationship of their own.

In this week’s episode “The Dead and the Living” (written by Howard Gordon and Christopher Keyser, directed by Gwyneth Horder-Payton), Bassam takes General Cogswell on his offer of an alliance… anything to save his wife and daughter:

Barry and Molly try to prevent a personal tragedy; Fauzi and Daliyah grow closer; and Ahmed uncovers a dark secret from Nusrat’s past. (via TV Guide)

Hmmm… Fauzi and Daliyah? I didn’t see that coming! Also, I’m pretty sure I know what secret Ahmed will uncover… and he might just end of killing his father for it.

Take a look at 15 photo stills from “The Dead and the Living,” including a look at how Emma is doing during her captivity.
