PREVIEW: ‘Outlander’ Season 2, Episode 11 “Vengeance is Mine”

June 15, 2016 By Funmbi Leave a Comment

After a disagreement with other leaders, Jamie is forced to separate from the Jacobite Army, which brings him and Claire in direct contact with redcoats. Get a sneak peek of this week’s Outlander (“Vengeance is Mine”), written by Diana Gabaldon, Herself!

Sassenachs, whenever I think of last week’s Outlander, one thing stands in the forefront of my mind, and it’s actually a point Claire makes. After Jamie acknowledges that Claire had been right about the Battle of Prestonpans, she says:
Claire: “I was, wasn’t I? That means I’m also right about the disaster awaiting us at Culloden.”

Even though the Jacobite Movement has some success, there are also huge costs. In the end, it’s quite possible that history is set in stone. I think this completely embodies the sentiment of the “Prestonpans” episode and the remaining three episodes in the season. There are three things that I want to highlight:

1. Jamie and Claire are SO together, and I adore their little team. While he’s out being a leader on the battlefield, she’s in the thick of things at the field hospital, leading her staff of nurses to save as many men as possible from their injuries. No matter what, Jamie and Claire are doing their best to make sure that, in the end, they will be together and their loves ones will be safe. When Jamie and Claire part ways before Prestonpans… their reunion after his victorious return… *FEELS* Nothing else might be OK, but Jamie and Claire are. We will need to hold onto their love to sustain us through the rest of the season.

2. Dougal is dangerous. His zealousness for the Jacobite Movement and his willingness to kill anyone is really scary. As if winning the battle isn’t enough, Dougal stays behind on the battlefield to make sure that all the redcoats are dead… even the ones that could be helped with medical care (e.g. Lieutenant Jeremy Foster). Then back at the field hospital, Dougal is so enraged that English soldiers are being cared for. If not for Jamie and Prince Charles, Dougal would have slaughtered all of those men. But what I think is most scary is Dougal’s reaction to the mere suggestion that the Jacobites won’t win. He can’t abide any hint of English superiority in the war or even the mention of reconciliation between the Scots and English. Prince Charles is right to be concerned; I know I am.

3. #RIPAngus: what a heartbreaking end to such a vivid character! I can’t say that Angus was particularly friendly, especially where Claire was concerned… but he was loyal to a fault and had a hilarious (and crude) sense of humor. I can’t help but think about the scene where he dies… his eyes, his struggle to live when there’s nothing Claire could do to help. Yes, Prestonpans is a victory, but is it worth the sacrifices, especially when, in the end (as we learn in “Through a Glass, Darkly“), the Highlanders still lose at Culloden? (Curse you Prince Charles!)

As we move into this week’s upcoming episode, we find there is little time for celebration after defeating the British during the Battle of Prestonpans because Jamie and Claire are forced into action once again.

In “Vengeance is Mine”, what was written by Herself, Diana Gabaldon 🙂 (directed by Mike Barker):

Claire and the Highlanders are sent north after the Jacobite leaders decide to halt their march on London. A band of redcoats makes trouble for the Scots, leading to a most unexpected reunion for Claire. (via STARZ)

Watch this clip from the upcoming show where we see Jamie starts to receive some backlash from Jacobite leaders (Quartermaster O’Sullivan) in particular, who are jealous of his influence over Prince Charles:

So Jamie and his men are essentially exiled to Inverness, given a task without the resources to execute it, AND Prince Charles took Jamie’s horse (*SHAKES FIST IN ANGER*).

Take a look at this second clip (via Marie Claire exclusive) that features a adorable moment between Jamie and Claire (in bed!!!):

*SWOONS* The love I have for Jamie and Claire! He watches her while she sleeps and whispers sweet nothings so she’ll have beautiful dreams. OHMYHEART!

In the images below, we see that as Jamie and Claire make their way to Inverness, they’ll come in contact with the redcoats, which is a big cause for concern… but it looks like our buddy Hugh Munro is back!
