PREVIEW: ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6, Episode 5 “The Door”

May 20, 2016 By Funmbi Leave a Comment

Sansa confronts Littlefinger; Yara makes her play for the Salt Throne; Bran spends too long in a particularly telling warg dream. Get a sneak peek of this week’s Game of Thrones (“The Door”), airing Sunday, May 22 at 9:00pm ET|PT on HBO.

Last week’s Game of Thrones  (“Book of the Stranger“) was all about reunions, especially of the sibling variety. And in each case, we saw the sisters take the lead in talking sense into their brothers.

First, after much speculation, wishing, and tears, we FINALLY got a partial Stark Family Reunion! Sansa arrived at Castle Black with Brienne and Pod in toe. At first when Jon announced he was leaving the Night’s Watch (“Oathbreaker“), I was so concerned that he’d leave Castle Black before Sansa got there. But when she arrived and those gates opened… Sansa got down from here horse as Jon came down the stairs… and then EPIC SIBLING HUG! I loved watching Jon and Sansa together, reliving memories from growing up in Winterfell. However, there were two moments that stood out most for me:

  • When Sansa apologized for being so mean to Jon when growing up. Catelyn’s disdain for Jon was well-known, and Sansa probably emulated her mother in that regard. But to see Sansa ask for Jon’s forgiveness and then hear him promise to stay with her… it was wonderful!
  • Sansa has grown so much since the first season, but this was extremely evident in the way she pushed Jon to return to Winterfell and reclaim their home for the Starks. Sansa wanted Jon by her side, but if need be, she would do this herself. And homegirl wasn’t even phased when Ramsay sent his awful (and poorly written) letter. His threats of rape and murder didn’t scare Sansa… rather it galvanized her (and Jon) to gather the forces to save Rickon and see Ramsay killed. And with Littlefinger convincing Robin to send Eyrie soldiers to save Sansa from the Boltons, Ramsay won’t know what hit him… I’m even more sure that when Ramsay dies, it will be at Sansa’s hand. (P.S. #PoorOsha #SaveRickon)

One step closer to a Stark Family reunion and I’m HERE for it! And while we’re at it, I wouldn’t mind Tormund and Brienne getting together too, OK! (#Briemund #Oafkeeper)

Second, in King’s Landing, Margaery and Loras were reunited and Loras was NOT well. He was physically and emotionally downtrodden (perhaps even suffering physical and sexual abuse while being held by the Sparrows). Loras seemed ready to take his own life and begged Margaery to make all the pain stop. She tried to encourage her bother to stay brave… but perhaps the best way forward would be for them to make a confession and plead for the Mother’s Mercy (#ShameShameShame *ding ding*).

However, we know that the Tyrells and Lannisters have entered into a bargain to allow the Tyrell army the authority to wipe out the Faith Militant. But here’s my question: once the Tyrell’s seize power, what makes Cersei think Lady Olenna is just going to give it back?

Third, Theon finally made his way back home to the Iron Islands just in time to witness a struggle of succession. After Balon Greyjoy was killed (by his brother Euron), Yara’s ascension to the Salt Throne is more complicated. While Balon wanted Yara to succeed him, in fact, it’s the Aeron reminds his niece that the Kinsmoot would choose the next ruler of the Iron Islands. At first, Yara was disgusted at the idea that Theon would return home, especially after her attempt to rescue him from Ramsay had gone so wrong (#Reek). Did Theon think he could be the next king? But Theon promised to help Yara claim the throne for herself.

In each of these, we saw female grit and determination. But the EPIC girl power moment was when my Queen and Khaleesi Dany burned the Dothraki temple to the ground with all the Khals inside… yet the Mother of Dragons, The Unburnt strolled out of the fire in all her glory and was greeted by veneration from the remaining Dothraki, Jorah, and Daario, who all bowed in awe. (Did you notice Daario’s face in particular? Watch that guy…)

I’m reminded of an interview with Entertainment Tonight where the actor playing Khal Moro (Joe Naufahu) claimed that there would be fireworks between Moro and Dany. Whereas we assumed this meant a romance, Joe was being LITERAL. There was heat… as she lit his behind on fire and killed him. WOWSA.

What were your favorite moments from “Book of the Stranger”?

In this week’s episode “The Door” (written by David Benioff  and D. B. Weiss, directed by Jack Bender):

Tyrion seeks a strange ally. Bran learns a great deal. Brienne goes on a mission. Arya is given a chance to prove herself. (via HBO)

The images and teaser trailer from the upcoming episode tell us a little bit more… we see that in Meereen, Tyrion forms an association with a Red Priestess named Kinvara. We also see that, in an intense warg dream, Bran comes face-to-face with the Night’s King:

I can’t wait to see Sansa confront Littlefinger! I just need her to stick with Brienne. Speaking of Brienne, I wonder if her mission includes killing Melisandre. While I may have forgiven the Red Woman (because she brought Jon back to life), it may not matter because Brienne is going to avenge Renly Baratheon’s death.
