During this year’s CinemaCon, Chris Pratt and Antoine Fuqua joined the Sony Pictures panel to present a first look at the the upcoming remake of classic Western, The Magnificent Seven (the 1960 film starred Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen, which is, itself, was a remake of the 1954 film Seven Samurai).
Pratt is joined by Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-Hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier in the roles of mercenaries/would-be protectors. Take a look at the film synopsis and teaser trailer below:
Director Antoine Fuqua brings his modern vision to a classic story in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ and Columbia Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven. With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople, led by Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett), employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Washington), Josh Farraday (Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Hawke), Jack Horne (D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Lee), Vasquez (Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Sensmeier). In an interview with Moviefone, Fuqua talks about the importance of ensuring the remake appeals to modern audiences:
Securing a diverse cast was important to the director, in terms of distinguishing the remake from the original for modern audiences.
“Having a diverse cast, I loved it,” Fuqua said. “It felt right to use diversity to fight tyranny.”In fact, the idea of Denzel in the lead role was one of the first things the director pitched when MGM asked him for what his version of the film would look like.

“We kept the DNA of the characters from ‘Seven Samurai’ for [the new] ‘Magnificent Seven,'” Fuqua clarified, adding that Kurosawa’s film was, tonally, his benchmark throughout production. Especially when it came to the “epic scale” of the film’s final battle.
