New ‘Game of Thrones’ Trailer Reveals More Season 6 Storylines

April 12, 2016 By Funmbi Leave a Comment

The latest Game of Thrones Season 6 trailer gives us insight into the fates of our favorite (and not so fave) characters in Westeros and Essos.

This past Sunday (April 10), the Game of Thrones Season 6 premiere took place at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theater, and from all accounts, this season kicks off with a high pace and lots of intensity (read this non-spoiler “review” from Entertainment Weekly). Most of the details for Episode 1 “The Red Woman”  (written by David Benioff  and D. B. Weiss, directed by Jeremy Podeswa) are embargoed by HBO, but they did give us a little context and a (VERY terse) synopsis of the Season 6 premiere episode:

Following the shocking developments at the conclusion of Season 5, including Jon Snow’s bloody fate at the hands of Castle Black mutineers, Daenerys’ near-demise at the fighting pits of Meereen, and Cersei’s public humiliation in the streets of King’s Landing, survivors from all parts of Westeros and Essos regroup to press forward, inexorably, towards their uncertain individual fates. Familiar faces will forge new alliances to bolster their strategic chances at survival, while new characters will emerge to challenge the balance of power in the east, west, north and south.

Jon Snow is dead. Daenerys meets a strong man. Cersei sees her daughter again. (via HBO)

So, this summary shouldn’t be too much of a surprise; typically, the Game of Thrones episode summaries have been short and to the point, but there’s something gut-wrenching about this one… mostly because I have a visceral reaction against any sort of confirmation that Jon Snow is dead. And obviously I’m still in a state of denial—like maybe Jon Snow starts out the episode dead, but is brought back to life by Melisandre! After all, she would have arrived at Castle Black right as the Night’s Watch was carrying out their mutiny. Plus the episode title “The Red Woman” *has* to be referencing her, the Red Witch! Right? RIGHT?!

Also, the fact that “Cersei sees her daughter again” leaves out that Myrcella is dead gives me some hope…

Well, in conjunction with the premiere, HBO released a new (second) trailer for the upcoming season, which happens to feature most footage we’ve seen from Season 6. Several of our favorite (and not so fave) characters get a little screen time. For example:

  • Jon Snow is dead (maybe 😉 ) and the Night’s Watch and Wildlings each try to regroup.
  • The Lannisters prepare for war against High Sparrow and the Faith Militant.
  • Arya continues her training at the House of Black and White.
  • After surviving her escape from Winterfell, Sansa links up with Petyr Baelish and swears revenge.
  • Tyrion and Varys reunite in Meereen and try to govern in Dany’s absence.

“That’s what I do; I drink and I know things.”—Tyrion

Yah, Tyrion also releases dragons! Something must be seriously wrong if releasing Viserion and Rhaegal seems like a good idea!
Speaking of Dany, Drogon is still having his adventures while Mother of Dragons has been captured with some not so friendly Dothraki. Don’t they know she’s khaleesi?!

But perhaps the bigger concern in that the Night’s King and the White Walkers are getting closer to breaching The Wall. YIKES!

What are your thoughts about the trailer? Do you have any Jon Snow theories? Share your thoughts in comments!

Game of Thrones‘ Season 6 premiere premieres Sunday, April 24 at 9:00pm ET|PT on HBO.
