It’s Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes’ big day! Get ready for another Downton wedding with a sneak peek of tonight’s Downton Abbey, airing at 9:00pm ET|PT on PBS Masterpiece.
Perhaps we should know by now that drama literally chases down folks in Downton Abbey. Even when we think a situation has been resolved, things have a way of creeping back up and causing big trouble. This is certainly the case in last week’s Episode Two, and here are a few of the moments that stood out most for me:
1. Now that Marigold is growing up in the Downton nursery with Edith, all should have been well. However, Mary’s impromptu trip to the Drewe farm (with George, Marigold, and Lady Cora in tow) shows us that Mrs. Drewe is definitely still pining for her lost-adopted daughter. Of course things really go off the rails when later in the show, Mrs. Drewe “kidnaps” Marigold during the fat stock show (believing that the Crawleys are ignoring the little girl) and takes her to the farm. In the end, I agree with Lord Robert that it’s best (read: convenient) for the Drewes to leave town. With that said, my heart breaks for Mrs. Drewe because she is a victim in all this too. Like Mr. Drewe says, when he and Edith hatched up this plan, they didn’t account for feelings—that Mrs. Drewe would come to love Marigold AND the possibility that Edith would want her daughter back. Yes the kidnapping is concerning and creepy, but (in my opinion), we should have seen it coming.
2. Plans for the Carson/Hughes wedding forge on, and while conflict is likely inevitable, I don’t expect that Mary would be the source of it! It’s interesting that Mary should take such an interest in the wedding festivities, even promising to bully Mrs. Hughes into accepting the Crawleys’ invitation to host their reception at Downton’s Great Hall. Unsurprisingly, Carson sides with Mary. He loves Downton and would be honored to get married there. However, I’m with Mrs. Hughes in her hesitation to accept the offer. The wedding day is supposed to be about the bride and Mrs. Hughes would rather have her wedding and reception take place outside of her place of work… “I just don’t want to be a servant on my wedding day. Is that so wrong?” Preach on Elsie! Yet, by the end of the episode, it seems Carson has sufficiently browbeaten his fiancee into doing things Mary’s way.
3. It’s wonderful to see Anna and Bates finally get good news… as well as Mary being kind and sympathetic. After a trip to Mary’s doctor in London, we learn that she has a condition where, after 12 weeks, her uterus is unable to hold on to the pregnancy. However, there’s a solution in the form of a small procedure, which the doctor can perform right at Downton. So, hopefully this means no more miscarriages for Anna… is it too soon to be hopeful?

YAY for Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes’ wedding… but what’s all this about more “drama” and “a disastrous turn”? I wonder if this has anything to do with Carson and Mary’s insistence that the wedding take place at Downton (even though Mrs. Hughes is quite opposed).
Well, this clip from Episode Three gives us a sneak peek of what else we can expect, this time focussing on the ongoing Denker vs. Spratt feud. In the video, Ms. Denker tries to learn more about Mr. Spratt’s friends/family from Lady Violet, but to what end?
Hmmmm, what is Denker up to? Any thoughts? Judging from the episode trailer (further down), it does seem like Spratt is acting a bit suspect…sneaking out at night and such. How curious!
