‘SHERLOCK: The Abominable Bride’ Special Coming to TV & Theaters in January 2016

October 28, 2015 By Funmbi Leave a Comment

SHERLOCK: The Abominable Bride Victorian Special will air in the U.S. and U.K. on Friday, January 1, 2016. U.S. fans will also be able to watch the special in theaters a few days later! Get the details and ticket information.

We’ve been very excited about the upcoming SHERLOCK special, especially since we got the first official trailer earlier this month! Even with this glimpse, details have been pretty scant… until NOW! This week, PBS Masterpiece announced the official title AND air date!

SHERLOCK: The Abominable Bride, a 90-minute special, premieres Friday, January 1, 2016 (New Year’s Day!) on MASTERPIECE Mystery! on PBS at 9:00pm ET. The special will be available simultaneously online at pbs.org/masterpiece and have an encore broadcast on Sunday, January 10 at 10:00pm ET.

BBC One confirmed the special will also air in the U.K. on New Year’s Day 2016, making it the first time SHERLOCK has premiered in the U.S. and the U.K. on the same day!

Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) will return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in the acclaimed modern retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic stories. But now our heroes find themselves in 1890s London. Beloved characters Mary Morstan (Amanda Abbington), Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves), and Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs) will also make an appearance at 221b Baker Street.

Co-writer Mark Gatiss gives us a bit more of an idea about what we can expect:

It’s not suddenly going to be a different show. It’s essentially our Sherlock as if we’d always done it set in 1895. It has the same sensibility. The language is obviously slightly different but we wanted it to feel as funny and as vivid as our modern-day one. Otherwise it would be a sort of dusty period piece which is not what we are interested in. (August 2015)

And as promised, fans will get the chance to see SHERLOCK: The Abominable Bride on the big screen!!! And according to co-writer/executive producer Steven Moffat:

Sherlock on the big screen. For us, it’s a giant leap backwards – into Victorian London. The mean streets of 1895 have never looked so good. (March 2015)

BBC Worldwide North America has partnered with Fathom Events for the first theatrical screening event of the special. The feature-length screening will premiere on Tuesday, January 5 and Wednesday, January 6, 2016 both at 7:30pm (local time).

Theater audiences will experience 20 minutes of exclusive, additional footage. Before the watching The Abominable Bride viewers will be treated to a guided set tour of 221B Baker Street hosted by co-writer/executive producer Steven Moffat. And after the special, we can look forward to a “making of” short film starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, and many more!

Tickets for SHERLOCK: The Abominable Bride will be available beginning Friday, November 6, 2015 and can be purchased online at www.FathomEvents.com, or participating theater box offices. The special theatrical event is expected to play in over 500 theaters across the U.S. (For a complete list of theater locations visit Fathom.com; theaters and participants are subject to change).

This is so exciting! You better believe I’ll be purchasing my tickets ASAP next-week Friday, and I certainly know you’ll be doing the same. While we set all the alerts for November 6, enjoy a new trailer for SHERLOCK: The Abominable Bride and a few new promotional images:
