VIDEO/PHOTOS: Preview ‘black-ish’ Season 2, Episode 5 “Churched”

October 21, 2015 By Funmbi Leave a Comment

On tonight’s black-ish the Johnsons expand their horizons by getting more involved in church! Watch a sneak peek of the show, airing at 9:31pm ET|PT on ABC.

In last week’s black-ish, Dre and his colleagues tried to create a new holiday to celebrate fathers and had very mixed (and hilarious) results.

In Dre’s experience, father’s never really got the respect of the formal holiday. Given its timing, buried between Mother’s Day and and graduation season, Father’s Day never had a chance. So he and his work colleagues came up with a new holiday, Daddy’s Day, that would make up its predecessor’s shortcomings. Daddy’s Day would be on the Sunday before Columbus Day, in the Fall, “far from the tyranny of Mother’s Day”.

When Dre called a family meeting to organize Daddy’s Day festivities, he expected quality cards with heartfelt messages, top-shelf gifts, and a glorious soundtrack of love (“Cele-Dre good times!). At work, they already had a list of international sponsors for the holiday, and Dre expected Zoey to take the lead as the face of the campaign. Unsurprisingly, Zoey wasn’t into it; however, her friend Resheida (guest star Zendaya) had lots of ideas about enhancing Daddy’s Day. Since she didn’t have a close relationship with her father, Resheida started to bond with Dre. He invited her to be the official face of the holiday, gave her driving lessons, and showed his love with some yelling (after all, “yelling is caring”).

Zoey became jealous, but instead of approaching her dad, she turned to Charlie as an alternative father figure…that didn’t work out very well, especially when she failed her driving test after Charlie’s terrible driving lessons. Dre felt bad for Zoey, and as a result of the guilt, he didn’t really give a good Daddy’s Day pitch to the business investors. But when he got home, Zoey surprised Dre with a Daddy’s Day celebration, balloons and ribs included.

Elsewhere, Junior decided to express his love for his mom by doing extra chores, giving her massages, and taking care of Jack and Diane. Mama Ruby was impressed and encouraged Bow to nurture this love….maybe Junior would even be willing to kill for her. This backfired when Bow realized her relationship with Junior was starting to looking like the one between Ruby and Dre. In the end, Bow decided she was showing Junior too much love and set up more boundaries (like no more snuggling in bed).

Tonight’s episode “Churched” was written by Corey Nickerson and directed by Victor Nelli. Check out the official synopsis below:

DRE AND BOW DECIDE TO BE “YES” PEOPLE AND ACCEPT AN INVITATION TO BRING THE FAMILY TO CHURCH?In the Johnson home, Sundays involve SAT prep and sports, so when the family is invited to Church on Sunday by the neighbors, Dre goes against his instinct of always saying “no” and agrees. When they end up having one of the best Sundays they can remember, they realize they should say “yes” to things more often. Meanwhile, Jack and Diane find out they were never baptized, and take it upon themselves to do whatever they want. (via ABC)

The upcoming show is LITERALLY taking us to church! Watch this clip from “Churched” where Dre and Bow have a family meeting to let everyone know that they’ve been invited to attend services during the upcoming Sunday. For the most part, the kids aren’t very excited, but Mama Ruby seems to be on board:

Oh happy day… #blackish is all new tonight 9:30|8:30c! https://t.co/S7gpCmAex4

“God knows my heart!”
“Yah, but he doesn’t know your face.”

Mama Ruby is so scandalized! Also, LOL at “C.E.O.” church-goers and Junior’s excitement to get one more use out of his Easter suit!

If you take a look at the photo stills from tonight’s episode (below) you’ll see that everyone looks really good in their Sunday-best…Mama Ruby is rocking the lavender and look at Dre and Bow with their purple accents!
