VIDEO/PHOTOS: Preview ‘black-ish’ Season 2, Episode 4 “Daddy’s Day”

October 14, 2015 By Funmbi Leave a Comment

Dre thinks Father’s Day doesn’t get any respect; he invents a new holiday and expects the kids to give him an epic celebration! Watch a sneak peek of black-ish, airing at 9:31pm ET|PT on ABC.

Last week’s black-ish focussed on Pops as a way to explore distrust of doctors and the healthcare professionals within the Black Community.

“Dr. Hell No” began with Dre bemoaning his first annual physical over age 40 (*cough*prostate exam*cough*). He expected some sympathy from Pops, but it didn’t come…especially since Pops hadn’t been to a doctor since 1985. He was relying on Afrin and his “old-man strength”! This seemed to match Dre’s experience from childhood. But given the history of healthcare treatment available to African-Americans (e.g. Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment), this made sense.

Bow set Pops up with an appointment at the hospital. He was pretty nervous when seeing other patients moaning (and a doctor heading to a meeting with a malpractice lawyer). But Bow got Pops to his appointment where the exam revealed he had a clogged artery and needed an angioplasty.

Dre was very concerned (it didn’t help that every time he talked to Bow, Pops’ chances of a smooth recovery dropped…from 95% to 85%). On the other hand, the kids clamored to claim Pops’ belongings; Junior planned to record Pops’ sayings for posterity.

Pops didn’t plan to go through with the procedure; he got a second opinion from his buddies at the barber shop, who suggested Afrin, liniment, and cranberry juice. But when Pops had a difficulty breathing when playing with Jack, he decided to go through with it. Pops and Dre were scared, but everything went well with the surgery. They were even able to bond while Pops recuperated.

Elsewhere, Mama Ruby was spoiling the kids, contrary to what Bow wanted: movies on school nights, violent video games, and lots of sugar. But after Diane got sick (churros, chocolate, ferris wheel in the heat), Ruby decided that maybe there was a place for rules.

In tonight’s episode “Daddy’s Day”, written by Vijal Patel, directed by Michael Schultz, and guest-starring Zendaya:

DRE COMES UP WITH A HOLIDAY INITIATIVE AT WORK CALLED “DADDY’S DAY,” CELEBRATING EVERYTHING THAT FATHER’S DAY IS NOT—After another lackluster Father’s Day overshadowed by graduation parties and summer vacations, Dre and his colleagues decide to come up with a holiday initiative entitled “Daddy’s Day,” celebrating everything that Father’s Day is not. When Dre meets Resheida (guest-star Zendaya), a friend of Zoey’s who doesn’t have a Dad, they develop a bond after he is snubbed by Zoey and she backs him up on the fact that Dads should be respected and heralded. Meanwhile, Junior decides to help Bow around the house but ends up becoming more of a hassle than a help. (via ABC)

Watch THREE clips from the upcoming show. In the first two clips, Dre laments the fact that the kids don’t take Father’s Day seriously (especially when compared to Mother’s Day). He wants to make Daddy’s Day better and calls a family meeting to organize celebrations. In the third clip, while Zoey isn’t too excited about the new holiday, Resheida (OHITHERE Zendaya!) has lots of ideas about enhancing the festivities:

LOL at “tyranny of Mother’s Day” and “Cele-Dre good times”!
This episode is going to be so much fun! You know Dre loves it when his feelings are validated, and you can already tell he’ll love being admired by Resheida. I wonder how Zoey will react to her role as “Daddy’s girl” being challenged a little.

Take a look at 15 photo stills from “Daddy’s Day” which give us a look into how Dre and his work colleagues come up with the idea of the new holiday as well as the development of the Dre/Resheida relationship.

The new black-ish airs tonight at 9:31pm ET|PT on ABC, so tune in and come live tweet with us!
