FIRST LOOK: ‘Joy’ Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Coming Christmas 2015

July 15, 2015 By Funmbi Leave a Comment

20th Century Fox releases the first teaser trailer for Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and Bradley Cooper; coming to theaters in December 2015.

After the amazing-ness that is Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, I am HERE for the Jennifer Lawrence/Bradley Cooper/David O. Russell collaboration!

Back in April during CinemaCon, 20th Century Fox revealed that later this year, they’ll be releasing Joy, written and directed by Russell and reuniting Jennifer and Bradley onscreen. Well earlier today, the studio released the first teaser. Check out the film synopsis and trailer below:

JOY is the wild story of a family across four generations centered on the girl who becomes the woman who founds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love, pave the road in this intense emotional and human comedy about becoming a true boss of family and enterprise facing a world of unforgiving commerce. Allies become adversaries and adversaries become allies, both inside and outside the family, as Joy’s inner life and fierce imagination carry her through the storm she faces. Jennifer Lawrence stars, with Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Edgar Ramirez, Isabella Rossellini, Diane Ladd, and Virginia Madsen. Like David O. Russell’s previous films, Joy defies genre to tell a story of family, loyalty, and love.

WOW, the trailer definitely portrays the incredible range and complexity of emotions embedded in this story. It’s clear that life takes a path different from what Joy might have initially wished for herself.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, David O. Russell comments about his various inspirations behind this project:

Joy (Jennifer Lawrence), a businesswoman who becomes the head of her family at the age of 27. To create the character, Russell was inspired by real-life mogul Joy Mangano — inventor and founder of Ingenious Designs — as well as the personal female influences of his youth, including his mother and her circle of friends.

“It’s my first film that really has the woman as the star,” he says. “What’s it like to become a boss and the godmother of a family and dynasty, both emotionally and commercially? You go inside that person’s soul, and it’s alternately hilarious, horrifying, and sort of joyous. Relationships are always complex, and nobody gets to success without breaking some of their own bones—and other people’s, too.”

What do you think of the trailer?

Joy opens in theaters everywhere December 25, 2015; make sure you’re following the film on their official social media accounts!
