Klaus and Freya finally force their siblings to choose… Watch a sneak peek of tonight’s The Originals “When the Levee Breaks”, airing at 8:00pm ET|PT on The CW.
On last week’s The Originals, Dahlia’s arrival in NOLA prompted an unexpected alliance between Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Mikael (Sebastian Roché) for the sake of protecting their daughters.
“Night Has a Thousand Eyes” began with Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin), Jackson (Nathan Parsons), and baby Hope taking a stroll through the Quarter. At that moment Dahlia struck, inhabiting bystanders and even Jackson himself to convey the message that she was there to take Hope. The Mikaelson family immediately convened to figure out their next strategy. Freya (Riley Voelkel) prepared a tonic that they could all take to prevent Dahlia from using the kenning spell on them. Unsurprisingly, Klaus refused.
In preparation to face Dahlia, the siblings split up, each with a plan to execute:
Klaus went to Davina (Danielle Campbell) for help finding Mikael (who we knew had the materials to kill Dahlia). In exchange for Kol’s ashes (which she could use for a resurrection spell), Davina agreed to the exchange. When Mikael returned to NOLA, Klaus was there to confront his father. However, this time, they would join forces to stop Dahlia (MiKlaus is born!).
*sidenote* We need to talk about how AMAZING Joseph and Sebastian were in this episode! Every time MiKlaus was on screen together, their twisted chemistry was clear, both as they traded insults and (eventually) fought side by side. Goodness, they were so similar…angry and with monstrous, murderous potential, but with a soft spot for their little girls.
Mikael had the three elements that would kill Dahlia—soil from her homeland, ashes of her Viking enemies, and blood of her adopted child (Freya). Davina then bound those ingredients to a dagger.
Elsewhere, Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) went to Josephine (Meg Foster) for help creating a safe house at St. James Infirmary where witches magic would be inactive. Miss Josephine refused…she couldn’t create a place where her kind could be helpless. Though Josephine empathized, this fight didn’t involve the Treme coven. However, when Elijah emphasized that her refusal would make her an enemy, Josephine agreed to a compromise. She would do a blessing and a disruption spell that would be a barrier against those who wished them harm. Elijah intended that Hayley, Hope, and Jackson would move their that evening.
However, Jackson had a plan of his own. Being inhabited by Dahlia jarred him…this wasn’t their war, and the best thing to do was take Hope and leave town. Jackson went to Aiden (Colin Woodell) for help getting away (though he didn’t know Aiden was secretly working for Klaus as his “eyes and ears”.)
*sidenote* For me, the particularly moving part of Aiden’s dilemma was watching him confide in Josh (Steven Krueger). These two are so sweet together…I really hope Klaus’ manipulations don’t ruin them.
Meanwhile, Freya wanted to use Jackson to trace Dahlia’s magic and figure out where she was hiding out. Freya channeled Rebekah (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), but before they could get any information, Rebekah stopped. She saw that Dahlia was actually channeling Freya (unbeknownst to her). So to protect themselves from that bond, Rebekah and Hayley told Freya to leave. And as Freya was walking down the street, she (and we) had our first interaction with Dahlia (Claudia Black) in the 21st Century. She was quick to remind her niece of that she was being ungrateful for all their years together…and when Dahlia was finished, she would be Freya’s only family left.
Freya returned to the Mikaleson compound and told Elijah and Rebekah of Dahlia’s plan to strike that night by killing Klaus and Mikael. She would be hiding in a place that was steeped in death, massacre, and blood…AKA St. Anne’s Church!
When MiKlaus arrived, Dahlia’s acolytes surrounded them and a vicious fight began. Dahlia’s followers were strong since they were infused with some of her power. Freya and Elijah came to help MiKlaus, but Dahlia was too powerful. She got hold of the dagger, destroyed it, demanded baby Hope be turned over to her, and disappeared.
Oddly enough, Klaus wasn’t discouraged. Dahlia destroyed the weapon, but they could get more ingredients—Freya’s blood, Norwegian soil…but Viking ashes? Well, Klaus had a solution there too. He betrayed Mikael and stabbed him with the white-oak stake. In that final moment between father and son, Klaus demanded to know why Mikael hated him and loved Freya. Mikael’s response: “I don’t know. I just did.” Then Mikael apologized to Freya and affirmed his love for her. And with a flick of his wrist, Klaus killed his father. They now had their Viking ashes. More interesting though was watching Rebekah and Elijah—they saw all this unfold, held Freya back, but didn’t seem at all pleased with their brother.
In other developments: Hayley, realizing that Dahlia was powerful enough to defeat the Mikaelsons, agreed to Jackson’s plan to leave town. But when the time arrived for Aiden to show up with the getaway car…he didn’t. Marcel (none the wiser) found them and escorted the three to the safe house in Algiers. Aiden gave Jackson the excuse that he was delayed by traffic, which worked…for now.
It seemed that Josephine had chosen a side in the upcoming war. She met Dahlia in a dark alley, played the violin once more, and stood silent while Dahlia slit her throat. This would send quite the message!

WAYWARD WAYS—Setting the stage for a bloody showdown, Dahlia gives Klaus and Hayley a deadline to turn over baby Hope. Elijah attempts to convince Klaus that they need to work together in their fight against Dahlia, but Klaus forges ahead with his own dangerous plan, leaving everyone concerned about his next steps. Meanwhile, when Hayley realizes their chances of outrunning Dahlia are slim, she devises a risky plan and enlists Aiden’s help. Elsewhere, Freya gives Rebekah and Elijah an ultimatum, and Marcel strategizes on how best to deal with Klaus’ erratic behavior. (via The CW)
One of the best parts of doing these sneak peek posts is getting to see Julie Plec and Michael Narducci‘s take on the new episode. And this week they tell us about how the rift between Klaus and Freya will finally force each member of the Mikaelson family to pick a side:
It’s so interesting how similar Klaus and Freya are. They both want to be the center of the family and demand all their love and loyalty. With that said, I really think Klaus is going to regret forcing this choice…especially when it seems that Elijah and Rebekah might not be so supportive of Klaus’ methods.
