BREAKING NEWS: Nina Dobrev is Leaving ‘The Vampire Diaries’ After Season 6

April 6, 2015 By T.J. 7 Comments

Nina Dobrev who brought Elena Gilbert on The Vampire Diaries to the small screen is leaving the character behind after its sixth season.

A few months ago, rumors were circulating that one of the three principles (Nina Dobrev; Paul Wesley; Ian Somerhalder) of The Vampire Diaries hadn’t signed their Season 7 contract. Many were certain it was Paul Wesley who portrays Stefan Salvatore, but nothing was confirmed. Then images from crew members of The Vampire Diaries from a goodbye party at Lake Lanier in GA from this past weekend hit the Interwebs, many stating goodbye to Nina Dobrev and Michael Trevino. This caused a new fury of rumors to go around. However, it is rumor no more. Nina Dobrev announced she is leaving The Vampire Diaries this evening via social media.

Dearest TVD Family, I’ve just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries. I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn’t just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there’s still so much more to come before the season finale in May. Elena fell in love not once, but twice, with two epic soulmates, and I myself made some of the best friends I’ll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever. There’s more to come before we wrap this up, and I promise you’ll get to hear all about my experiences over the next month as we approach the season finale (I have given an exclusive interview for the June issue of SELF Magazine that I am excited for you to see!), but until then I invite you to hop on the roller coaster ride that is Elena Gilbert’s life and join me as I celebrate her and prepare to say goodbye to her — and to my work family — as I move on to the next chapter of my life. I want to share this goodbye with all of you (this weekend’s pictures were just the beginning). You, the wonderful fandom who gave more love, support and passion than anyone could have ever imagined seven years ago, when a young Degrassi girl from Canada showed up in LA to audition for ‘that Twilight TV show.’ 😉 I love you all. Fasten your seatbelts. If you think you know what’s coming, you don’t. Love, Nina

I know this makes many of us sad, but let’s rejoice in the immense amount of joy Nina brought us in the role of Elena Gilbert, and wish her well in the multitude of adventures she will have in the future.

Now with Nina’s departure many questions are already circulating. Will the show begin to focus around another female protagonist and if so, who will it be? Or will the show revolve around Damon and Stefan Salvatore? Or around Stefan? At the moment only those in The Vampire Diaries camp has that answer. For now, we let the news sink in that Nina isn’t returning for season seven and we await her exclusive interview in the June issue of SELF magazine, where she will provide us with more details.

Continue to check in with We So Nerdy as we provide you all the details on Nina’s departure and what lies ahead for The Vampire Diaries.

The Vampire Diaries returns with a new episode titled,”I Could Never Love Like That,” on April 16, 2015 on The CW at 8/7c.

On a similar note, Michael Trevino will no longer be a series regular on “The Vampire Diaries” after the sixth season. This information was confirmed via Executive Producer Julie Plec on various outlets, but we are awaiting an official notice from Michael before we do a full news posts. Michael Trevino is slated to be on ABC‘s “Revenge” spin-off “Kingmakers.”
