RECAP: My Top TGiT TV Moments! (10/23/2014)

October 27, 2014 By Funmbi 7 Comments

I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that Shonda Rhimes and Julie Plec are trying to kill me. This statement probably borders on narcissistic since neither showrunner knows I even exist, but I like to think that they can feel my Thursday TV/fandom love permeating social media and into their realm of consciousness. In any event, this week’s episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and The Vampire Diaries kept ratcheting up the drama and spectacle, leaving me with my mouth gaping wide open, my heart racing, and my feels in disarray. Let’s discuss my fave TGiT moments! *SPOILERS AHEAD*

1. Grey’s Anatomy–Trouble in Paradise

Calzona makes me happy. I love their relationship with one another, with baby Sophia, and (when he was alive) with Mark Sloan (Eric Dane), who I dearly miss. But as Shonda Rhimes has said several times, the same-sex couples will not be exempt from the ups and downs, issues, and potential heartfail.

When Arizona cheated on Callie with Dr. Lauren Boswell (Hilarie Burton) in season 9, I know we were all devastated, but Calzona survives! However, it seems that their disagreement about having another child together may not be survivable. In “Bend and Break,” I loved seeing Callie and Arizona work through therapy. The separation is so hard, but it seemed to be working! Arizona was making progress in her fellowship and Callie was helping patients and reaching out to old friends! In fact, my favorite moment from the episode was when Callie and Mer got drunk together and sang the vagina song. It was great to see Callie laugh again, and of course, there was slight comfort in knowing that Mer/Der were having marital issues too. But, in the end, Callie found that not having to constantly fight to save her relationship with Arizona was freeing, and Callie really craved that freedom. And when Callie got up and left the therapy session at the end… 🙁 I don’t know if this means Calzona is officially over, and to be honest, I don’t know what to think. I want Callie and Arizona to be together, but I also want them to be happy. *SIGH* What a dilemma!

As I sit here and think more and more about this past Thursday’s episode, I realize that Papa Pope won. Everything that’s going on, every issue and problem that our fave characters are having are precisely a result of a decision or action that Rowan has made. Think about it: first, because of Rowan/B613, Huck had to leave his wife, Kim (Jasika Nicole) and baby behind. And now that he’s found them again, Kim doesn’t believe Huck’s justification and won’t let him see his son! Watching Huck have so much hope about finally being able to see Javi and, come to find, Kim called a doctor–SO SAD! Maybe Liv could reach out and help convince Kim that Huck is telling the truth about B613…

Next, Jake is being held for killing Jerry Jr. and, for some reason, both Fitz and Liv seem to believe that he’s actually guilty! Now, you know I love Fitzlivia/Olitz and I want them to be together, but that doesn’t mean I hate Jake or that I want Fitz to beat him to a pulp! Fitz *has* to know that Rowan is playing him, which leads me to believe that Jake is right when he says Fitz is using this to take out his anger about not being able to be with Liv anymore, while Jake can. When Jake tells Fitz: “You’re one of the good guys. She calls them White Hats. You don’t think you are, but you are. It’s why she loves you. I’m one too. It’s why she loves me.” *literal tears running down my face* because it’s TRUE! And Liv could possible be the only person who could talk some sense into Fitz, but it looks like Liv believes Jake is guilty too! It was really sad when Abby came to see her (not on good terms) and Liv completely broke down. And this makes NO sense to me. Why in the world would Liv believe this about Jake? Why would she believe Rowan now?

I think there are two other sub-stories/breakdowns that are also Papa Pope’s doing–Mellie Grant and David Rosen. So, of course, Rowan had Jerry Jr. killed and Mellie isn’t coping well. But this week when Mellie found out that Jerry was targeted by possible terrorism, Mellie seemed oddly relieved. She was glad to be able to think of Jerry Jr. as a soldier…that he was sacrificed so Fitz could be president. I found that to be very disturbing–but I guess the good thing is now she seems to be getting back to her old self.

And, unexpectedly, David had a pretty bad crackup this week too. He tried to be Olivia Pope. He tried to use B613 to make a difference and work for the country’s best interest, and even though it worked, he now feels so bad about blackmailing Judge Sparks and, ultimately, contributing to his death.

So you see, Papa Pope has won, but is the world really better for it? Is Olivia better?

3. How to Get Away with Murder–Exposing Mr. Darcy

So we’re 6 weeks away from the night Sam Keating is murdered and things are unravelling quicker than we can say “why is your penis on a dead girl’s phone”! First, I really need to reiterate how much I think Viola Davis is owning this show. She’s just brilliant! When Annalise confronts Sam about the photos–the anger, the tears, the paranoia are all so palpable! And we learned a tidbit about how Annalise and Sam got together–it seems that Sam cheated on his first wife with Annalise. How interesting! Both have a history of being unfaithful (past and present) and I do wonder if wife #1 might show up.

And of course creeper Bonnie overhears Annalise’s argument with Sam and witnesses him being put out of the home. I’m really curious about why Bonnie is interested in protecting Sam. Does she love him? Is there some other connection between them that we don’t know yet. Either way, Bonnie really isn’t going to take Sam’s death well when it comes out.

I liked that we spent a good portion of time with Laurel–she’s really not as quiet or innocent as her classmates make her out to be. Laurel is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve her goals. She’ll strategically place information about jury nullification so a soft-hearted juror can find it and be swayed. She’ll encourage the group to use the bonfire as an alibi so they don’t get caught for murder. She’ll even manipulate her relationship with Frank for the same purpose! I really hope we’ll learn more about Laurel’s background and why she makes the choices her does.

Finally, Rebecca and Wes know. They’ve seen the wallpaper–Sam is Mr. Darcy–so basically the jig is up for Annalise and Sam. How are they going to get out of this one? Annalise has some major explaining to do and Wes will demand it. I’m still not sure that I like Rebecca and I don’t understand Wes’ fascination, but at least we’re starting to understand how we’ll end up in the Keating residence with the group standing over Sam Keating’s dead body.

In this TVD episode, we got pretty important answers about several things we’ve been wondering since the beginning of the season. But as usual, they more we find out, the more questions develop.

I loved seeing Bonnie in awesome mid-90’s fashion–my fave outfit this week was the overall shorts 🙂 Anyway, Bonnie has her magic back, and she, Damon, and Chi are one step closer to getting home. But it seems the one obstacle to their liberation lies in Damon’s past. *sigh* Damon has done some pretty horrible things, and he’s unapologetic about it. But the fact that the worst day of his life is the day that he killed a pregnant woman who was also carrying the child that’s his relation makes me feel very conflicted. I’m still not a Damon fan, and I don’t know if I think it’s enough that he feels remorse and makes pancakes in Gail’s honor. But I do appreciate that Damon defen ds Bonnie from Malachi (the sociopath that he is). Here’s hoping that Bamon is able to figure out a way out of 1994 and back home.

And once Bamon gets home, Damon and Stefan owe their descendant Sarah Salvatore a lot–some answers, maybe a house and an inheritance too…just saying!

It shouldn’t surprise you that I also *really* enjoyed the Stelena scenes. The Stefan Cooper/Elena Williams proposal and baby announcement were sweet and funny, but also made me nostalgic for season 1. But it seems Stefan is resigned to the fact that Elena loved/es Damon–and the thing is he loves and misses his brother too. But Stefan’s going to have his hands full with Ivy Vampire…

What were some of your favorite TV moments this past week? Did you like any of the ones I mentioned?
